MURPHY PROVIDES ROUGHRIDER UPDATE

Saskatchewan Roughriders Assistant V.P. of Player Personnel John Murphy appeared on 620 CKRM’s SportsCage on Monday to provide an update on the goings-on with the team.  However speaking from his home in New Orleans, Murphy admitted we are currently in a “dead period” on the CFL calendar.

“I think it’s more of quiet time because everybody is hunkering down to see what they saw at E-Camp, and are starting to find other kids that’ll be in this CFL draft (May 10),” Murphy explained.  “Guys that didn’t go to E-Camp or were injured and didn’t get a chance to perform there.  We’re doing some research on the regional combine guys and make sure we’ve dotted all our I’s both for that part of the evaluation and also for the minicamps.”

Murphy said the most notable thing on the horizon for CFL teams is their minicamps which are scheduled for next month.

“Teams are starting to post dates for their minicamps and six or seven of the nine teams will have completed their minicamps by the third week of April,” Murphy said.  “It’s a busy time on one part of the ledger but maybe it’s more of a quiet time on the other side.  But like I spoke about during free agent time, I do expect that there’ll be a second wave of free agency which will probably come in that late-April to training camp timeframe after teams put their eyes on their rookie and first year players.

“There’s a strong possibility that there will be some roster movement taking place at that time and some excitement will take shape.  But there’s not too much excitement right now that the fans get to see and talk about but there’s still a lot of work that needs to get done in the next couple of weeks before minicamp.  Following that camp coaches will get some time off.  They’re working through the Easter holidays and then they’ll get time off after the camp and come back to Regina in late-April to get ready for the draft on May 10.”

I mentioned to Murphy that perhaps we’re currently in a “third wave” of free agency since players like John Chick, Weston Dressler and the like were snapped up in early February while players like Chris Getzlaf and Chad Owens had to wait a few weeks before signing deals.  Now CFL vets like Tyron Brackenridge and Juwan Simpson – who are still on the market – have to sit by their phone and wait for an offer.

“Sometimes this gets to be the time like during the sixth and seventh round of the NFL Draft where players are saying that, as crazy as it sounds, you’d almost like to go undrafted because then you get to pick your spot,” Murphy theorized.  “With a guy like Brackenridge or Juwan Simpson and other quality candidates like that who are still out there, they’re probably thinking there’s nothing they can do in a training camp atmosphere to prove what you still have on the table.  Do you want to risk playing in a preseason game or are you better off waiting for a Week 1, 2 or 3 injury so that you can go to a team and know you’re looking at a full year’s salary?  With the ups and downs of the salary cap era, teams are going to wait to see what the young guys can do before they jump on a veteran guy.”

The Roughriders 2016 spring minicamp is scheduld for April 9, 10, 11 in Vero Beach, Florida.

The usual bunch of BS. This guy has no idea of what is going on. The Riders are in for one sad season.

One thing for sure, Mr. Murphy has the gift of gab. A real treasure for sports shows and for Rider/CFL news and views. Should be a special year for all us Rider fans hungry for detailed coverage as the 2016 season starts to gear up and get underway with the new regime at the wheel.

Disagree heavily with the first post. Agree heavily with Shaun. And to Linda, I would just say temper your expectations for this season just a little. The Riders are young and will need some time. Hard to go from scorched earth to contender in one season. Some of the pieces might not all be there in the first year but the team as a whole will be on a better path.

Its always other teams fans posting on here 1st. John Murphy created all the depth the Stamp's are so fortunate to have. He is a mastermind and within 2 year the Riders will have depth at all positions as well. The first Anon posters are the ones that are full of BS!

There is the usual BS for sure. This coming from the trolls who simply don't know anything about football, and have a putrid life. Murphy likely urinates out more football brains than the combined total the trolls profess to have.

They really needs to get a life…seriously!

Too bad the first Anon post doesn't include where they are from or whom they cheer. But that would be a dead give away.
No instead they hide their true colours pretending to represent Rider Fans. Obviously not a Rider Fan. Guess what? We of Rider nation are smart enough not to agree with trolls. Too bad you are not smart enough to realize that.

Murphy is the reason for the depth of the Calgary Stampeders…I am very sorry but that is total crap, the reason the Stamps have there depth is from there GM Huffnagel so grab some reality…Murphy never even played football he is useless so when Jones leaves your screwed but your riders are going to still suck anyways. You guys keep commenting to make yourselves feel warm at night but when season starts you are going to hide like the gophers you are. I guarantee you that Riders are last in the west as everyone has improved…Riders are nothing but question… Read more »

It's hilarious watching clueless know-nothings insist upon something that is wrong so fiercely. Like the denial of Murphy's contributions to the Stamps. Murphy, useless? Huff, solely responsible for the overall depth and talent level in Calgary? Only in your sad, pathetic dreams! John Murphy's ability to find talent is well known throughout the league. Any football person would laugh in the face of anybody stupid enough to call him "useless." Fact is, John Murphy WAS a huge part of the Stamps' talent and depth. Huffnagel's background is in COACHING. He was a great offensive coordinator before a great head coach,… Read more »

Not a troll or a stamps fan, just telling it as it is. Jealous of what…a team with 4 grey cups and history of losing, yeah so jealous hahaha. Your riders pretty much just have to show up to the field this year and they are doing better already so makes it easy for jones and murphy to look good. I can not wait until July 8th and watch the riders get stomped in style live.

“I can not [sic] wait until July 8th and watch the riders [sic] get stomped in style live.”… Awe, it’s the little illiterate Eskimo troll back for a visit… Thought that was you little buddy. Sure wish your mommy and daddy would teach you to stop interrupting adults when they’re talking… Now run along and go play, ok?
