O’DAY ON THE TRADES
Roughriders GM Jeremy O’Day was active on Wednesday’s CFL Trade Deadline Day, dealing veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn to the Montreal Alouettes and leading rusher Jerome Messam to the Calgary Stampeders. The details of the trades are in the posts below.
O’Day appeared on 620 CKRM’s Coaches Show on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the moves. Here are some of his quotes:
ON MAKING THE TRADES
JO: More excited just to get everything finished. It’s a little emotional when you’re making these types of decisions so you’re kind of up and down through the whole process not knowing exactly where it’s going to end up. But at the end of the day we felt pretty good about the decisions that we made and what it means for the future of the Riders.
EXPLANATIONS OF THE DEALS
JO: With Kevin, for us, it was a decision that we made based on the future and wanting to see our young guys play. Really we just decided that we didn’t see Kevin being part of our plans down the road so we wanted to 1) make a decision that was good for us but also 2) make one for Kevin to give him the opportunity to go to another team. At that point we were able to get a draft pick back but again the bigger part was that’s the direction we’re going at that position.
With the second trade, again it was a situation where we didn’t feel very confident with bringing Jerome back (he’s due to become a free agent in February). There’s a number of factors that go into that and one is he’s only under contract for the next three games, he’s coming off one of his better years and age going forward is a concern although he’s playing in his prime right now. But it was an opportunity to get a young kicker but to also move up in the draft which is important for us to continue building and developing our Canadian talent.
WHY WAS GLENN EXPENDABLE?
JO: Eventually you have to make a decision on where you foresee the future of the team and from my standpoint, eventually you’re going to have to start developing quarterbacks and get young. Maybe it’ll be the next Kevin Glenn or the next Darian Durant. Obviously we feel good about Darian’s recovery and where he’s going. We fully expect him to recover but it’s also very important to get a look at our young quarterbacks and we’re excited to see those guys play. We get an opportunity to take advantage of the bad situation that we’re in by giving some young plays the opportunity to play that they normally wouldn’t have had if we were in a playoff run. We’re trying to turn the page and build for the future.
End this season ASAP. Clean the house, new gm, coaching staff, scouting dept, stadium, direction moving forward to unknown exciting team future. Current team a got damn mess.
Wow Oday has no clue what he's doing if the riders weren't the laughing stock of the league this year than these trades will do it!!Please don't keep him on!!
Thanks to mess am and Glenn for all your efforts and positive contributions to Rider nation. best of luck with your new teams. It will be interesting to see how see how Messam fares running behind a GOOD offensive line that is very talented and well coached. Ditto to Glenn playing behind a well schooled offensive line. In 2013, DD and CS made our o-line look good, they were that good. Anyone who thinks differently, I Await your remarks and counter-arguments.
What a joke. Every GM in the CFL knows you don't draft kickers you pick them up as free agents. So why trade your MVP for an unproven kicker. Jerome Messam is exactly the kind of non-import talent you build your team around. But again, we throw away great Canadians kinda like the way Ricky Foley was tossed aside for damaged goods in the form of Emery. J.O. just showed us all he's not ready to become a real GM. But judging from these moves I guess the CEO has already made up his mind who's getting the job cause… Read more »
If you are going to have a canadian rb you need a canadian back up. Do the math. Rb's are a dime a dozen. Use that canadian spot for a lineman.
im ok with trading older guys to get picks but you still have to make good trades. Messam trade is kind of meh return. idea is ok, execution not so hot imo.
If you just want to dump big salaries then why not trade off DT Terriaus George who's been awful this season.
Rider Nation continues to show its lack of intelligence.
Passionate, yes. Educated, no.
Messam free agent at end of season. Where is he going to go? There will be no market to pay top dollar for a Canadian running back anywhere in the league. With the new rules it is a passing game more than ever and if you are paying more than 80K for a guy you are upsetting your cap.
Save the money for o line!
I'm interested to see who the neg list player is. that's the key to the Messam trade.
You will never find out.
"If you just want to dump big salaries then why not trade off DT Terriaus George who's been awful this season."
You just answered your own question….
Rookie moves that anybody could make. I'm sure we would have taken anything for Glenn. Messam now really is another story. How does anyone know what he would have extended for? A leading rusher and a Canadian to boot. We get an unproven kicker, a neg player and a 3rd round pick..meh, and give up the pick we got for Glenn, Messam..rushing leader calibre player. He has a couple good years in front of him. Considering he is what you need when your the Western finals or scold Grey Cup. You build around good Canadians. We really got nothing, nothing… Read more »
These were very good trades for the future! Quit blaming O'Day for all the shitty trades Taman made
"How does anyone know what he would have extended for?"
By talking to the player and his agent. Actually not difficult at all to figure out.
Be smarter than that if you are going to throw stuff out.
It shows the Rider Nation intelligence by asking to trade our worst players.
Hey Huff, want any of our aging, overpaid, or under performing players for your Cup run? They were main cogs in our 2-13 run.
Oh and we will want premium return because we are the Riders and our fans know everything.
Hahaha you are so right on the money with your comments! Good job
"These weren't astute moves but rather a thank you moves for save a buck minds"
Do some research and figure out the implications of saving cap money at this time of year. Then consider the potential free agents that could be available in December that that cap money could go to.
Like me, there is a reason you are an anonymous blog poster and not a GM.
With a day's hindsight, I still think the Messam trade is idiotic! That neg list player had better be the second coming of Doug Flutie to make this worthwhile.
And don't give me the BS about "he was a free agent". About 1/3 of the league is, every year. You think he wouldn't have re-signed with us after we gave him his last best chance? He said he was disappointed to be leaving Regina.
Wow that was quite the trade… KG for a 5th rounder… Wow amazing stress that must have been!
I assume someone had to sign-off on the lame duck GM deals?
The Ticats get young Canadian defensive back Edem for a Draft choice from Montreal. We get a fifth round Draft choice for Glenn. Calgary gets Riders MVP for an unproven kicker, but wait they went from a 5th round pick to a third round. Heck you have to believe the moves are correct because RV and RP appear to support JO as the next coming. Me thinketh that there is a reason that Huff and Austin are perennial winners. Oh well another year like this one and even a new stadium will not keep the fans in the park. Not… Read more »
