EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers have hired Stan Bowman as the team’s general manager and vice-president of hockey operations, the club announced Wednesday.

The 51-year-old becomes the 11th GM in franchise history after 20 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, including 12 years as general manager.

He replaces Ken Holland after his contract was not renewed following five seasons in the Alberta capital.

Bowman stepped aside from his duties in Chicago in October 2021 and was subsequently banned by the NHL, along with longtime coach Joel Quenneville and Blackhawks executive Al MacIsaac, after an independent investigation into how they handled a sexual assault allegation in 2010.

Former Blackhawks player Kyle Beach alleged he was assaulted by Chicago video coach Brad Aldridge during the team’s Stanley Cup championship season, and that the team mishandled the situation.

An independent investigation commissioned by the Blackhawks concluded their response to the allegations were inadequate. Quenneville later resigned as Florida Panthers coach, while Bowman and MacIsaac left their positions with Chicago.

All three were banned from management and coaching positions in the NHL until  commissioner Gary Bettman reinstated them July 1.

“I believe his vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization,” Oilers CEO of hockey operations Jeff Jackson said in a statement. “Through our many conversations, we share a common vision of where we are as a team and what is required to achieve another Stanley Cup title.”

Edmonton is coming off a 49-win season that culminated with a seven-game loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup final.

The the uncancellations begin. I get it a 31 year old grown man is assaulted by a video coach and somehow that’s Bowman and Quenville’s issue. No different than Akim Aliu being personally shattered by playing the music in the dressing room nobody wanted to hear. Times they are a chaning and for a town like Edmonton. Well….yah can go hire Jennifer Botteril or even Haley Wickenhieser…..I’m thinking Daryl Katz like the mega $ rolling in. I’m thinking the town of Edmonton enjoyed that playoff run party. I’m thinking there comes a time when people realize we don’t need to… Read more »

Okay I see it all coming together now into this new era. Teams still wanna win…..just have play the game. The new cottage industry is getting the stamp of approval from of all people….Sheldon Kennedy? Sheldon Kennedy gets welcomed back into the NHL with ever loving arms. Theoren Fleury and Todd Holdt somehow are left out in the wind. They’ve all gone to the factory for reprogramming so all should be fine now. ….this all falls on poor parenting. The first thing you tell your male child when it’s past the parent skate tying phase. – “If anyone touches you.… Read more »

The assault in Beach wasn’t alleged. I see what you’re doing though.

Okay well the era of perpetual victimhood and the Taylor Swift style of “Victim Bullying” era will be drawing to a close. In the Autumn of 2024 we’ll be taking Saskatchewan back and making it great again. Advance Regina 2024 will be sticking to the issues – so that’s the end of the activism on Regina City Council which resulted in a 21% asleep at the switch electorate. President Trump 2.0 will get the USA back on track 2025 can’t get here fast enough for PP to take the country back. If you’re so heart broken over a muscle bound… Read more »
