O’SHEA STAYING IN WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed head coach Mike O’Shea to a three-year contract extension.

O’Shea won his second consecutive Annis Stukus Trophy as the CFL’s top coach this year after leading the Blue Bombers to a club-record 15 regular-season wins and a third straight trip to the Grey Cup.

The Blue Bombers are 82-58 under O’Shea with Grey Cup championships in 2019 and 2021.

Winnipeg has posted six consecutive seasons with double-digit wins, matching a franchise-best stretch first established from 1957-62.

A former star linebacker, O’Shea was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017 after a 16-year playing career with Toronto and Hamilton that saw him earn three Grey Cup rings.

He began his coaching career as special teams co-ordinator with Toronto from 2010-13, helping the Argonauts win a Grey Cup in 2012.

Many people will recall Chris Jones being compared to and referred to as “Don Mathews 2.0”. For those of us around the CFL in depth I can tell you the only thing Chris Jones has in common with Don Mathews is they both have 2 arms, 2 legs, and a head. The comparison stops there. Mike O’Shea comes off the Don Mathews coaching tree and is the star pupil. That’s no disrespect to Scott Milanovich, but O’Shea is thee guy. He was an incredible player and was a guy that ration or no ration beleive me he’d be on the… Read more »

A correction. Mike O’Shea doesn’t come off the same coaching tree as Chris Jones. Don Matthews last coached in the CFL in 2008. Mike O’Shea started his coaching career as a STC in 2010. So, no, O’Shea never coached at the foot of “The Don”. I agree with most of what you said BUT a comparison to Jones, who Rider fans still love to hate, is difficult. Jones is a guy you want to turn around a franchise quickly. He is on his 3rd round as a HC & in 2 years, got Edmonton a GC after inheriting a 4… Read more »

Wrong If you play for a coach then you are off of that tree. You can also be part of a tree based on influence and philosophy. You’re part of a tree as clearly your head is made of wood casing. What makes your commentary so sad, pathetic, and eroneous is the amount of time you put into it and the fact I stopped reading after 3 sentences. I do not hate Chris Jones. I don’t know the guy. I do know there is a reason after 16 years that genious was never tabbed to run a franchise. Ed Hervey… Read more »

If you want to put any player on a coaching tree without having actually coached with that coach, well Angelo, I guess every player that ever played in any league is technically under every coach’s “tree” he ever played for. That’s 1 sentence for you. Don’t want to go by your attention span, with all due respect.
