REGINA — Connor Gay’s second goal of the game, with :47 seconds left in overtime, lifted the Regina Pats to a 4-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos Friday night in the Brandt Centre before 4581 fans.
The first-place Pats battled back from an early deficit, trailing 2-0 after one, but overage forward Dyson Stevenson cut the deficit in half with his 34th of the year at 8:34 of the middle period.
Regina took a 3-2 lead in the third on goals by Gay and Patrick D’Amico however the Broncos’ Coda Gordon knotted the game at 3-3 with 7:36 remaining.
That set the stage for Gay’s overtime heroics, as he beat Swift Current goalie Eetu Laurikainen with a beautiful effort.
The Pats outshot the Broncos 40-37 while going 0/3 on the powerplay and 1/2 killing penalties. Daniel Wapple made 34 saves to get the win in goal.
The victory gives Regina (37-23-6) an eight-point lead over the Broncos with six games remaining in the regular season. The Pats are chasing their first East Division pennant since 2008 when Curtis Hunt was coach.
The Pats visit Moose Jaw Saturday night at 7:00 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 6:35 pm).
Another great game to watch! Hats off to Connor Gay and his linemates…best line by far tonight. Wapple another stellar effort as well. Just hope we can get Huntsy and Leier back before too long to regain our depth. Just let's not take the Warriors to lightly Saturday as they won't want to lose all their games to us this year.

Brooks/Gay/Wagner looked great tonight. If they can play that way together for a few more games, that could gives the Pats four solid lines. Would be great if they can show that effort again. Gay showed us he has hands tonight. He played a great game. Pats had a lot of bodies out again tonight in McVeigh and Harrison, while Reagan was out a second game. I'm guessing something is going through the room. Never heard the pre-game, so not completely sure. If this is this case, at least it's happening now.

I've Ben a season ticket holder for 18 years and from a fan's point of view this appears to be the best coaching staff the pats have had during that time. Granted, there are limits to what we can know about the coaching staff when sitti in the stands. However I can see the evidence of good coaching. 1. The top line is playing very well as a unit. 2. The middle six forwards are light years ahead of where they were when they began the season. 3. There is recognition by the coaching staff of who is playing well… Read more »
