REGINA — The Regina Pats won their fourth consecutive game and hit the 30 win plateau with a 4-2 victory over the Spokane Chiefs Saturday in the Brandt Centre before 4703 fans.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and Regina led 2-1 after 40 minutes thanks to a pair of goals by Jesse Gabrielle.  Rookie Pats phenom Sam Steel scored the game-winner at 9:17 of the third period finishing a lovely goal-mouth feed from linemate Braden Christoffer.  Steel then unselfishly added an assist on teammate Patrick D’Amico’s empty-netter with 17 seconds remaining in regulation time.

The Pats were outshot 31-26 while going 1/5 on the powerplay and 2/2 on the penalty kill.  Daniel Wapple made 29 saves to collect the win in the Regina cage.

Spokane (25-23-3-1) got goals from Riley Wittingham and Adam Helewka while Garret Hughson took the loss in goal making 22 saves.

Regina (30-17-4-2) swept their three-game homestand and now will visit the Medicine Hat Tigers Tuesday evening at 8:00 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 7:35 pm).

I can not believe how well this team is playing after all moves made at the deadline. Maybe a 40 win season. Never saw that coming. John Paddock sure looks like he is up to the task of turning this franchise around. Hobbs and Gabby are real nice players. If the other young players that were acquired turn out, The sky is the limit with this group.

Well at least this win should keep Lee Anne quiet for a little bit more. 30 wins as of Feb 7, not so bad. Perhaps a 50 win season coming in the next year or two.

Another great game by Waps in net. Call up Elmer looked good as well. There sure are a lot of good young prospects waiting to make this team full time. Future looks very bright. Gabby is hitting his stride using his grittiness and skill now to make a difference. He is playing on the edge so Paddock will have to know when to tow him in, but he is fun to watch.
