PATS 4 WHEAT KINGS 2

REGINA — 16-year old rookie Sam Steel scored twice including an empty-netter as his Regina Pats dumped the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-2 Wednesday evening.

It may well have been the Pats’ best home performance of the year, knocking off the nation’s 5th-ranked team.  Brandon spanked Regina 6-1 in the home-opener but the Pats served notice they’re a vastly different team since then as they’ve won nine of their past 10 games.

It was Teddy Bear Toss Night in the Brandt Centre and Regina’s Pavel Padakin got the game’s first goal midway through the second period to send the plush toys flying. It was Padakin’s third career Teddy Bear Toss goal as he’d twice accomplished the feat while with the Calgary Hitmen.  Rykr Cole scored Regina’s other goal.

The Pats outshot Brandon 40-28 and improved to 17-10-1 with the victory. Daniel Wapple got the win in the Regina net as the Pats moved to within nine points of the first-place Wheat Kings.  Regina was 1/4 on the powerplay and 2/3 killing penalties.

The attendance was 3694.  The Pats visit Brandon Friday night at 7:30 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 7:05 pm).

WOW! This team is truly impressive, didn't see it coming. Beating the top 3 teams in the WHL over the past month is absolutely sick. Kudos to Paddock and crew as I'm now officially a believer in the direction of this team. Go Pats!

I can't believe Padakin scored again at Teddy Bear Toss night. Amazing!!!! This team is playing at a high level. Way to go boys, you're doing a great job! Keep it up, let's keep going.

Cannot believe that with the way this team is playing we cannot get 4000 people out. Lets throw some support behind this team.

I was impressed with the play of the Pats. Both goaltenders were very good. But that had to be the most boring atmosphere I have very been in. No crowd noise at all. Near the end of the game some fans tried to get a "go pats go" cheer going and it was about 31 people cheering. I looked around the crowd last night and noticed that the crowd consisted of either teenage girls or senior citizens. In my section with about 3 minutes to go, approx have the people left ther seats and headed for the exits. It was… Read more »

WOW, if the Pats don't soon crack the CHL Top 10, it may be time to call in the RCMP!

A Pat Dynasty has now begun.

only one thing different about this team and the recent years past … the man behind the bench. Too bad he will be one and done and back to the pros.

Where are the people that were saying, Im not going until the Parkers sell and the team gets better, Well guess what folks that has and is happening. And not even 4000 people. Whiners got nothing bitch about anymore, that must be terrible for you guys! They just beat the 2 best teams in the league back to back, no excuses now.

Regina has the worst hockey fans. They don't show up to watch a good young team and when they do their hands are warm. What a joke.

Watch a game in Kelowna or Spokane. Those cities make Regina look 100% bush league.

Tickets are too expensive, I have kids that are busy, cold weather, no parking, saving for Christmas, lots of hockey on TV, Survivor, … I have all kinds of excuses.

I guess the two gripers are ignoring the 5000 plus at home against Seattle last month?

But remember that 2000 were there to watch Ethan Bear of the Seattle Thunderbirds.

People are too busy watching CFL replays. When will people in this province realize the CFL is junk like the rest of the world?

I think junior hockey across the board could benefit from some format restructuring. The product has become a bit stale.

Hopefully the talk of an expanded
Memorial Cup tournament comes to fruition. I would love to see a 16 team single elimination tournament.

Have teams play a handful of out of league games. How good would it be to have the London Knights or Halifax Mooseheads roll into town.

If Rogers is dedicated to making this a national product they should take steps to engage the fans across the country.

to the poster about the 5000 fans out to watch the Seattle game…. did you not notice who was on the Seattle roster that got out those fans? There is a player on that team by the name of Ethan Bear from 1 of the local First Nation Reserves around Regina, there was easily 1000-1500 first nations people at that game and that's how we got 5000 fans at the game. As for the Pats team it has been a real treat to watch this team on webcast and at home games as im a season ticket holder, but a… Read more »

"Have teams play a handful of out of league games. How good would it be to have the London Knights or Halifax Mooseheads roll into town."

……expensive!!! Western to Eastern Conference teams only see each other once a year due to costs, let alone inter-league games across the country!

Also, a 16 team, single elimination for the Memorial Cup?!?! LOL…where'd you here that?? That sounds like an extra 12 teams getting a chance at what three teams should really only have a chance at. That makes sense…

Rich or Ron Sutter (I can't tell them apart) was at the Pats game last night. What organization does he work for and was he scouting or preparing for a trade?

They don't ask how, they ask how many fans. Kudos to the Pats for figuring out how to tap into the ticket potential of a number of visiting players on Seattle (Bear and Ottenbreit).

You'll notice that all mighty Moose Jaw, who does everything better than the Pats by many accounts, had 3107 against Seattle, where were all the First Nations people that night?

Fans will find excuses regardless – kudos to those who have stood by their word, got off their asses and into the Agridome to support the hottest team in the WHL.
