REGINA — Adam Brooks’ second goal of the game with 1:52 remaining in regulation time was the winner as the Regina Pats held off the Kootenay Ice 5-4 in Wednesday evening WHL action at the Brandt Centre.

The Ice led 1-0 after the first period and the game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.  Chase Harrison, Dryden Hunt and Braden Christopher scored the other Pats’ goals while Daniel Wapple made 27 saves to collect the win.  Pats rookie Sam Steel chipped in with an assist.

Regina outshot Kootenay 47-31 while going 1/8 on the powerplay and 3/4 killing penalties. The attendance was 3209.

With the win Regina improved to 4-2-1 (2-0-1 on their current homestand) while Kootenay fell to 2-4-0.  The Pats host the Tri-City Americans Friday at 7 pm on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 6:35 pm).

Another great win by the Boys in Blue tonight. Lets start putting more butts in the seats. Other than the opening night home game "stinker" the guys have been playing very exciting hockey.

I went to the game last night. My goal is to get to about 20 of them this winter. The Pats have a very good team, but goaltending is really shaky. The NHL/AHL pro style coaching really shows up in how they play. Paddock works them all in, and if they cut down on penalties this team can really gel down the stretch. Sam Steele – that kid is the real deal. Those screens add to the experience, but this team should be getting more fans out. It'll take time to bring something back that was run so far into… Read more »

Obama….did you agree with the 3 Star selection last night? Guess not everyone approved of them.

Although I'll agree that a Head Coach shouldn't care about who the 3 stars are, I will also say that Paddock had a very good point. First star to a goalie who took the loss and allowed 5 goals? Get better.

I for one was NOT "thrilled" with Phil Andrews 3-Star picks. I totally agree with Paddock's comments. No way a losing goalie should be the 1st star even though he played well. There were more deserving Pats players who gave their all for the win e.g. Christopher; Wagner
Give your head a shake Phil!

@Matthew, When I was a little kid I would stay for it. In all honesty in the past 20+ years I couldn't tell you who the 3 stars were in a game. Don't know and frankly don't care. I do know if Paddock gave a pithy response, that is one of the reasons he never seemed to go far in the NHL as a top man. Media relations is part of the deal. I will never leave a game early, but when the buzzer goes I am up and out and getting to the vehicle as quickly as possible to… Read more »

Pedersen, I understand you are upset with Paddock's comments (sticking up for Phil), but be careful of the things you say publicly. You just might get a call from your boss…

The coach was sticking up for his players.

An employee of the team, selects the opponents goaltender who takes the loss with 5 goals. Optics dont look good for Phil on this one.

I bet you Phil will take some internal heat for this one.

I really believe Paddock had no idea who picks the 3 stars so he wasn't knowingly throwing Phil under the bus as you suggest Rod.

….I see both sides. You protect your people. Coach has to show he has the players back. The employer needs to stick up for his guy.

…put it this way. If an employer lets someone walk over his guy…well there isn't much to say about the employer.

They should defend Phil to the ends of the Earth he's young, and young guys need to be protected. Right off the pat I hope CKRM sets the tone it's a new day and the old days of pushing around no longer apply.

You got to love a guy who tells it like he sees it. He is not political and doesn't give a rats butt about what anyone thinks. He is here to turn a franchise around, win hockey games, and develop players. The responds in one or two words what other folks take paragraphs. Didn't know who Deschaneau was and didn't care. It's all about his club and what he puts out each night. He will likely be back in the pro ranks before too long but I sure hope he stays. Struch better learn as much as he can because… Read more »

So Rod is angry that a coach stuck up for his players? What an odd comment by Roddy. I wonder if he'd be saying something like this about a Rider coach? I'll go with no.

I don't agree with a losing goalie getting top star. He made some serious highlight reel saves and was entertaining to watch as the Pats pounded 47 shots on him.

This team is fun to watch and they played a more disciplined game than they have the first couple of games at home.

Love the centre ice screens. Much better for watching the replays instead of through the mesh at the end of the rink.

unbeated in regulation in the last 5 games….keep it up Pats!

John Paddock played in the minors with Brian Burke. Say what people will, both are take it or leave it.

In Burke's case I left it a long time ago. Paddock, that guy fascinated me for years. He was like Bruce Boudrea. You get a Hockey News subscripion and every year those guys are winning Calder Cups and you're wondering why are they not in the NHL.

Paddock is going to do well with this team. Imagine if you will Paddock reporting to the former GMs?…to funny to even think how those conversations would go.

Paddock's comments were perfect. Here is a coach that cares so much about his players. He was speaking from the heart and the players know it. This is just one way to get the most out of his team. It will pay off as the season continues. Look for more of these types of comments from John. Great game last night.

..I've looked into it.

Paddock basically did a Reg Dunlop.

Lean into the sink, sigh,…."ah Dave you get to be my age you have to think about retiring…I know all the other players laugh at me….yes they do I hear 'em…every game…"

…worked for Dave Carlson it'll work on this group.

Once again Slapshot teaches all.

If any of you were at the game, and judging by the attendance its unlikely you were. Hoflin was the ONLY reason Kootenay was in that game.

Actually Hoflin did well, he was beat clean, but 5 goals and a loss is still a loss.

Lemme get this straight….if some pathetic wannabe like Joel Gasson of CJME makes the identical three stars Phil took its OK. The three stars are the "opinion" of the person making them and Phil chose those three players as the best on the ice. As someone who was at the game, I might have had the kid who got the hat-trick as first star and the goalie as 3rd star. If John Paddock is concerned about who is and who isn't the 3 stars of the game then I really question his ability. I thought it was a mistake to… Read more »

Well John Q if the Ice deserved 2 of 3 stars because they were the best players on the ice then why didn't the Ice win! …especially being that one of the "best" players was the Ice goaltender. Anyone not seeing the game or knowing the outcome would think the Ice won based on the 3 stars selected and they did not deserve to win. The Pats did and deserved to be recognized in the selections. Agree whole heartedly with Paddock's comments for sticking up for the Team. Why bring up Malcolm…he's in the past and deservedly so based on… Read more »
