Three unanswered goals in the third period put the game away as the Brandon Wheat Kings swept the Regina Pats out of the WHL playoffs with a 5-1 victory Friday evening at Westman Place.

Brandon provided all the offense they’d need in the first period with goals from Jesse Gabrielle and Richard Nejezchleb for a 2-0 lead. Regina’s Morgan Klimchuk scored the lone goal of the middle frame but that was all the scoring the Pats could muster.

The Wheat Kings’ Jace Hawryluk, Ryley Lindgren and John Quenneville scored in the third to put the game on ice.

Brandon outshot the Pats 42-29 while going 1/7 on the powerplay and 2/3 on the penalty kill. The attendance was 4705.

Regina’s Daniel Wapple made 37 saves in the loss while Brandon’s Jordan Papirny made 28 saves to collect the win.

The Wheat Kings move on to face Edmonton in Round 2 while the Pats are headed home.

Okay this is not the time to take digs, and dredge up the past 19 years. However to be fair I think, we all think when the Parker family bought the Regina Pats it was a good idea. Are we in agreement on this? Now not pointing fingers, but I think we all think they could have done a better job. Are we in agreement on this? If the Parkers sell, I hope it's to an NHL contingent and not a Priestly group type who want to hang around with players in the dressing room. That went on for years… Read more »

Let's hope Speedy Creek can represent Saskatchewan in the WHL playoffs because the other 3 cities (Regina , Saskatoon & Moose Jaw ) are a joke when it comes to playoffs. Cities like Regina and Saskatoon should be able to come up with better teams, but year after year we end up seeing the so called bigger cities eliminated before the smaller ones . What is going on ??

Almost makes you wonder, was it really worth making the playoffs when this happens? They really were not in this series except for game 3 and you can debate that after blowing a 4-1 lead.

Losing 6 consecutive games to the same team. Brandon was by far the much better team. What a disappointing end to a season that was nice story up until the last couple weeks. Maybe Swift Current should be awarded the banner for first place since they had the same amount of points, but actually have won some playoff games.

..two years ago 82 points with hardly any talent, a playoff win and a well played series against a 94 point team…flash forward two years…this season 85 points season (numerous trades) and out 4-0 in the first round against a 77 point team..

NOW..that's what I call progress.

Say what you want about the saskatoon leadership group, the pats are now tied with them for next year in last place. I like it, two results based business orientated managements about to build character through competition to prove which team is really last. The only way out of this dilemma is for either team to sell to the coop or teachers pension fund.

And to think a year ago exactly, pats fans were beaking the Blades, their fans & their city. Move over Blades, you have company.

To the above anon. The Moose Jaw Warriors are the ONLY team who have had playoff success in the last 10-15 years. Since 2002 they have made playoffs 9 times, made the second round 5 times, two Conference finals, and an Eastern Conference Championship.

You sound like members of the LP staff who refuse to give MJ credit. No other Sask team has done anything except for the Warriors. Like them or not.

Who cares both Regina and MJ suck. I can't stand either team. (Although, at least the Warriors win a playoff series once in awhile)

Another thing Regina has is history theyhave won 4 memoriAl cups I don't care if it was ancient history. It is something Regina should be proud of .when you all look it up on internet or whatever it will show that Ottawa and Regina lead that race and no other Saks teams even come close. It- just like the Toronto maple leafs they won long ago but you still can't take that away from them

If you think market size isn't a factor in building a team you need your head examined.

Agents love to send kids to NHL markets. Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton never have recruiting issues. On the flip side, Swift Current is aways battling hard to sign their bantam picks or lose them to NCAA.

The fact that Mark Lamb iced teams in Swift Current with last year's league MVP and this year had 4 guys in the top 40 for scoring, 4 players ranked by Central Scouting and two of the league's top euros is nothing short of a miracle.
