PATS TO FACE RED DEER IN ROUND TWO

RED DEER, Alta. – Adam Helewka had two goals and an assist as the Red Deer Rebels beat the Calgary Hitmen 5-3 Saturday night in Game 5 to win their first round Western Hockey League series.

Adam Musil, Grayson Pawlenchuk and Jeff De Wit also scored for the Rebels, who took the series 4-1.

Red Deer will face the Regina Pats in the second round of the post-season.

Jackson Houck, Bryce Platt and Pavel Karnaukhov supplied the offence for Calgary.

Trevor Martin made 26 saves for the win in net as Cody Porter kicked out 25-of-30 shots in defeat.

The Rebels converted twice on four power plays with the Hitmen going scoreless on three chances with the man advantage.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Gage Quinney had two power-play goals and an assist and Connor Ingram stopped all 26 shots he faced as the Blazers shut out Kelowna to force a Game 7 in their first round playoff series.

Garrett Pilon and Collin Shirley rounded out the attack for Kamloops, which evened the series at 3-3.

Michael Herringer turned aside 10-of-13 shots in 29:11 for the Rockets before giving way to Brodan Salmond, who made 19 saves in relief.

Game 7 is set for Monday night in Kelowna.

Red Deer did not look impressive last night even though they won. The Pats have so much more speed. If the Pats play like they have been and stay out of the box this should be a great series!

This series should be a different animal for both teams. Round 1 saw the Pats mature quite a bit as a team, especially on the blue line. The return of Colby Williams has cemented the wall on defense and the attention to details by other, primarily forwards, has made the Pats a team to fear. Red Deer has loaded up and will only get better. The difference may be in special teams. And should the Sutter effect take place, much like the KM effect in Brandon, Regina will suffer.
