JLB ELECTRIC GAME RECAP: PATS UP 1-0

Keith Hershmiller Photography

REGINA — The Regina Pats grabbed a 1-0 lead in their WHL Eastern Conference Final with Swift Current thanks to a 4-2 victory over the Broncos Friday night in the Brandt Centre.

The Broncos had the jump early, outshooting the Pats to the tune of 10-3 in the opening half of the first period and Glenn Gawdin gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just 2:01 into the contest.  However the Pats found their legs around the midway point of the opening frame and goals by Patrick D’Amico and a pair from Pavel Padakin gave Regina a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Swift Current made it a one goal game in the second period courtesy of an even strength goal by Jay Merkley at the 10:53 mark.
There was only one goal scored in the third period and it was an empty-netter by Pats captain Braden Christoffer with 18 seconds remaining to put the game on ice.
The Broncos outshot the Pats 37-33 overall but Regina goalie Daniel Wapple was named the game’s #1 star after turning in a 35 save performance.  Swift Current’s Landon Bow took the loss making 29 saves.
NOTES:  Regina was 0/1 on the powerplay and 1/1 killing penalties … The attendance was 5361 … Former Pats captain Chris Schlenker was one of the game’s two referees.
The Pats will take a 1-0 lead into Game 2 of the first round series Saturday evening at 7:00 on 620 CKRM (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 6:35 pm).

If the stripes are going to put their whistles away all series, advantage Pats.

A couple things; 1) Jared and Al are the go to guys for WHL hockey analysis. Even on the concourse last night I ran into Jared and he explained the first 5 minutes of what Paddock was trying to establish. It made perfect sense. Al and Jared are also just "likable" guys which resonate through on the air. If you disagree okay they don't take in personally because they're so secure in what they are talking about. Kelly is a nice guy, but he's like John Lynch. He doesn't know anything. Most of us don't, but him, Scruffy and Lynch… Read more »

How long did it take the Pedersen mobile to get out of the parking lot?

That is an issue Evraz officials are really going to have to examine when the new stadium comes on board.

The home and garden show was over by the time the Pats game was done and it still took 40 minutes from time game ended for me to hit Lewvan.

That is ridiculous.

The Pats were not good last night. Wapple was and that's the reason they won. The pats are having certain players targeted for extra abuse. #19 of SC was taking liberties he shouldn't have been allowed to. William s was hit on a few cheap shots and they can't let that happen. If they don't SC will win this series.

Parking will be a huge issue… Pats Games.. Events, such as the Home & Garden, Football Games, events in the event plex, hockey. It is short cited of the City to not address the entrance /exit access.
That will come after, but to little to late. There is not sufficient parking when all is said and done. Access like above hit it right on the head.. Pack a lunch and better have a ton of patience, cause you will be there for a while..

Stadium or no stadium. Access out of EP has always been a problem. When will the old stadium and the old barns be knocked down so A)more parking and B) perhaps another access road in and out of park can be developed? I think part of the reason why crowds are what they are at hockey games is the headache getting out. It took me over a half hour to get out last night. On a Wednesday night when it is 30 below, I don't have time for that. Here's hoping Evraz is going to use some of that money… Read more »

not a very good game by the pats last night- give us a C+ – but lots to excited about as a pats fan. for starters, the fact we can win a playoff game with an average effort. number 2 is that there is so much room for improvement, if we bring our a-game we may actually be able to enjoy a deep run. the good – danielle wapple. goaltending wins in the playoffs and wapple was the best tender on the ice. he is the only reason we werent digging out of a huge hole after 10 minutes. reat… Read more »
