PHIL’S 2014 THRILLS

A look at the stories of 2014 from where I sit:

January 10th – The Regina Pats acquire goaltender Daniel Wapple and forward Logan McVeigh from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for goaltender Nick Schneider and a 3rd round pick in 2016.

February 2nd – Jon Ryan and the Seattle Seahawks win Super Bowl 48 in convincing fashion over the Denver Broncos.

February 18th – The Regina Thunder name Dave Jackson defensive coordinator and Jay Smith as receivers coach. (Jackson ended up in Winnipeg with the Blue Bombers before the season started.)

February 19th – The Pats complete the season sweep of the Saskatoon Blades going 8 and oh. The final win coming on the road 4-2.

February 23rd – Team Canada wins Gold at the Olympics in Sochi Russia. 3-0 was the final over Sweden with Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz and Jonathan Toews scoring the goals and Carey price made 24 saves for the shutout.

February 24th – Pats forward Morgan Klimchuk named the WHL player of the week after 6 goals and 3 assists in 4 games. The Pats won all four of those games.

February 28th – The Pats in the month of February finish with a record of 10-2-1-0, charging to top spot in the East Division. Their first 10 win month since the 2001-02 season.

March 1st – Kootenay Ice forward Tim Bozon admitted to Saskatoon hospital and is diagnosed with meningitis.

March 1st – The Pats compete the sweep of the season series over Moose Jaw with a 7-3. 8 wins no losses to their biggest rivals.

March 14th – The Regina Pats clinch their first East Division title since 2007-08 season. The club got to overtime at home to Brandon and the point secured the top spot.

March 28th – Tim Bozon leaves the hospital.

March 28th – Pats swept out of the Eastern Conference playoffs by the Brandon Wheat Kings in a 5-1 loss on the road.

April 8th – Jose Canseco visits Regina for the annual Regina Red Sox Dinner at the Turvey Centre.

April 30th – The WHL Board of Governors unanimously approve the sale of the Regina Pats to Queen City Sports and Entertainment by the Parker family.

May 1st – The Regina Pats select goaltender Jordan Hollett in the 1st round of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. The first time the Pats have ever drafted a goalie in the first round in their history.

May 2nd – Don Hay named head coach of the Kamloops Blazers.

May 12th – The Edmonton Oil Kings win the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions with a 4-2 win on the road in Game 7 against the Portland Winterhawks.

May 25th – The Pats sign 1st round pick Jordan Hollett.

May 25th – The Edmonton Oil Kings beat the Guelph Storm 6-3 to win the Memorial Cup.

June 1st – Bob Woods named new head coach and GM in Saskatoon with the Blades,

June 13th – The Los Angeles Kings win the Stanley Cup with a 3-2 double overtime win in Game 5 over the New York Rangers.

June 24th – Malcolm Cameron fired as head coach of the Pats after assistant coaches Josh Dixon and Bill McGuigan step down.

July 2nd – The Pats select Russian defenceman Sergey Zborovskiy in the first round of the CHL Import Draft,

July 17th – The Moose Jaw Warriors hire Tim Hunter as head coach.

August 1st – The Regina Thunder open their 2014 training camp for the first time as defending champions.

August 6th – John Paddock hired as Senior VP of Hockey Operations and Head Coach of the Pats.

August 13th – The Pats hire Dave Struch as assistant coach,

August 19th – The Pats complete their coaching staff by hiring Darrin McKechnie.

August 21st – The Pats open their 2014 Training Camp.

September 6th – The Regina Thunder come back from down 19 points with 1:43 left in the 4th quarter and win 26-25 in Saskatoon over the Hilltops.

September 23rd – The Pats acquire Pavel Padakin from the Calgary Hitmen for a 3rd round pick in 2017.

October 1st – Mike Sillinger joins the Pats organization helping with scouting and recruitment.

October 18th – The Regina Thunder defense as CJFL Champions comes to an end with a 20-17 loss at home to the Calgary Colts.

October 26th – Gordie Howe suffers stroke in Texas.

October 26th – The Saskatoon Hilltops with the PFC Championship over the Calgary Colts.

October 29th – The San Fransisco Giants win the World Series in Game 7 over the Kansas City Royals with a 3-2 victory. Madison Bumgarner named MVP.

October 31st – Cory Cloustin fired as head coach in Prince Albert.

November 8th – The Riders season comes to an end with a loss in Edmonton in the West Semi-Final.

November 26th – The Vancouver Giants fire Troy Ward as Head Coach.

November 30th – Claude Noel replaces Troy Ward as Head Coach in Vancouver,

December 2nd – Pats goaltender Daniel Wapple named WHL Goaltender of the month for November. He went 8-1-0-0 with a 2.19 GAA and a .931 Save percentage.

December 9th – Drake Berehowsky done as head coach in Lethbridge.

December 10th – Brad Robson let go as GM in Lethbridge.

December 10th – The Regina Pats get honourable mention in CHL Top 10 rankings.

December 11th – Josh Morrissey traded to Kelowna from Prince Albert.

December 14th – Morgan Klimchuk cut from Team Canada’s World Junior team.

December 16th – The Pats win their 20th game in the first half of the year in a 5-4 OT victory in Brandon over the Wheat Kings.

December 17th – The Pats get honourable mention in CHL Top 10 for a second straight week.
