RAIDERS 7 PATS 1

On Mike Modano jersey retirement night in Prince Albert, the Raiders showed flashes of the high-flying Raider teams of the late 1980’s with which Modano starred.  In a fight-filled affair Friday evening, P.A. trounced the Regina Pats 7-1 at the Art Hauser Centre to improve to a division-best 10-6-1.

The Raiders built up period leads of 1-0 and 5-1 in the WHL East Division showdown, and cruised to the victory.  Jayden Hart led the way for the home team, scoring twice and assisting on another.  Darcy Zaharichuk also scored twice for the winning side.  Geordie Maguire scored the lone goal for Regina.

Regina goalie Mac Engel stopped 22 of 29 shots before being ejected as part of a third period melee.  Raider goalie Cole Cheveldae was shown the door as well after making 28 saves.

Special teams let the Pats down in this one as they were 0/7 on the powerplay and just 4/9 on the penalty kill.  In the end Regina outshot the Raiders 34-31.

The Pats (8-9-0) return to action Sunday afternoon when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at 2:00 pm in the Brandt Centre (Press Box Sports Bar Pregame Show at 1:35 pm).

This game was so disgustingly ugly to watch. Horrible character and leadership, undersized, too slow, lost every battle and the list goes on and on. After spending good money to watch all I could say after was why. In the course of a week they've been beat 8-2 and 7-1. Beaten and outscored in three games with PA 13-3. Do coaches and management really think they have the talent here? Our PK is last in the league and our PP isn't that crap hot either. Going out to the high power USA division should be exciting. It's not about where… Read more »

Hey Chad, what's with bringing in a goalie named Mac Engel who plays with no discipline as a goalie. When was the last Regina Pat goalie that took 14 mins in penalties. This guy is not going to help our team in the short/ long term. Get rid of him now. He has no value. Paul

What ever happened to Cameron's belief of riding a goaltender while he is hot?? Engel is not the answer – we need another backup or groom one of our prospects.

It's obvious watching last nights game that the CFL isn't the only team with bad officials. Watt and Stephenson were abysmal. These guys have reached the pinnacle of their careers for sure. How come our penalty kill is so bad? I guess it starts with no goaltending at all. Engel has been a bust and should be thanked for his service and sent home. I can't see him being much help on the road trip. The goal he lost it on was waved off at any rate. The other 7 on 29 shots were allowed..LOLThe only thing the Pats need to… Read more »

Last time I saw a goalie like that it was Dustin Slade. So now every team now knows how to get him off his game. The only reason a goalie should act like that is when he's getting the gears like Hanrahan in Slap Shot and someone is talking about his wife Suzanne. That type of non discipline is then warranted. I can't for the life of me decide who was better in the WHL: Mike Modano, Theoren Fleury or Joe Sakic. It's impossible, but I watched Mike Modano deke a nondescript Defenseman named Tim Logan completely out of his… Read more »

The Pats have a heap of trouble on their plates. Poor Pk and poor goaltending spells big time problems. Klimchuk does't seem to be very happy on the first line. He gets his points but many feel he is below where he should be be. Leier is a shooter and Klimchuk is a set up man. Maybe they should be put together. Currently all the guys on the #1 line are the pass first type of guys and are similar in make up. Maguire is a shooter so maybe he should work with Stevenson/Stephenson.Don't agree with Engels actions but at… Read more »

Oh and for the record when Pat Conacher was making them play an air tight defensive game last year that some people might say was "boring", can anyone now guess why he'd want that style of play?

Yeah thought so.

You open it up and let them run WHEN you have the horses to run and gun. That's Hockey 101 pals o mine. Here endeth the lesson.

Breaking News – just saw Russ Parker at the TD Bank at Vic Square. Alot of interest from onlookers. Do you think it's true? Has the team been sold?

Reg, I was one of the onlookers. Saw a contingent of business men present as well. I counted 5 of them. They all went with Russ Parker into some office. Guess time will tell. When news breaks officially, it will be interesting to know the new owners.

I don't often agree with you Obama but you are right on about your points. Conacher knew they didn't have the horses to play run and gun. The core of the talent didn't change over the off season so how the hell can you change how you play. Some posters and media types were saying how refreshing it was to see different hockey. 7-1 and 8-2 losses aren't too refreshing. go figure…all three of our rookie forwards have a grand total of 2 points between them. Scherback in Saskatoon has 26 points and Barzal has 20. Many are 10 and… Read more »
