REALTY ONE MONDAY EYE-OPENER

RBC CUP:  Shawn Bowles scored once and set up two more as the host Portage Terriers downed the Carleton Place Canadians 5-2 on Sunday to claim the RBC Cup.

Davis Ross, Brad Bowles, Grant Valiquette and Jordyn Boyd also scored for the Terriers, whose only loss at Canada’s men’s junior A hockey championship came against Carleton Place in round-robin action.

Alex Robinson and Maxime St. Pierre supplied the scoring for the Canadians, who lost in the finals for the second year in a row.

Portage’s Zac Robidoux made 26 saves for the win as Guillaume Therien stopped 22-of-26 shots for Carleton Place.

Valiquette opened the scoring for the Terriers at 14:17 of the first period.

Ross doubled his club’s lead 2:42 into the second, but Robinson responded midway through the period for the Canadians to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

HOCKEY WORLDS:  Sidney Crosby got the better of Alex Ovechkin once again.

Crosby had a goal and an assist as Canada dominated Russia 6-1 to win the ice hockey world championship. It was the 25th world title for the Canadians, and their first since 2007. They scored 66 goals in winning all 10 of their tournament games.

Claude Giroux and Tyler Ennis also had a goal and an assist each. Mike Smith was only called on to make 10 saves as the Canadians outshot Russia 38-11.

Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves to lead the United States to a 3-0 win over the host Czech Republic in the bronze medal game.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS:  Frederik Andersen played a huge role in the Anaheim Ducks’ ability to take Game 1 of their first Western Conference finals in eight years.

Andersen made 16 of his 32 saves in the first period, allowing his teammates to slowly take control of an eventual 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. He helped Anaheim kill off an early Chicago power play, keeping it scoreless until Hampus Lindholm beat Corey Crawford 8:48 into the game.

Lindholm, Nate Thompson and Jakob Silfverberg each finished with a goal and an assist, with Thompson and Silfverberg scoring in the final 7:55 after Brad Richards got the Hawks within 2-1 in the last minute of the second period.

Kyle Palmieri scored the eventual game-winner for the Ducks, who host Game 2 on Tuesday.

CFL:  Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive lineman Adrian Robinson has died. The Tiger-Cats announced the news in a statement on Sunday, but didn’t provide any further details. Robinson signed with Hamilton as a free agent on April 27 after stints with several teams in the National Football League.

MLB:  The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling. They lost to the Houston Astros 4-2 for their fifth-straight loss. They finish their seven-game road trip by going 1-6 and have lost nine of 12 road games after starting the year 4-2 away from the Rogers Centre. Toronto hosts the L-A Angels for a four-game set tomorrow.

Canadian James Paxton continues to extend his scoreless streak. The Ladner, B-C, native allowed five hits in eight innings while striking out two as the Seattle Mariners shutout the Boston Red Sox 5-0. He used his fastball effectively in stretching his scoreless streak to a career-best 20 innings.

NBA:  It will be the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors in the NBA’s Western Conference final. Houston never trailed in Game 7 to down the Los Angeles Clippers 113-100 and win the series. The Rockets were able to overcome a 3-1 series deficit in the process. It’s the first time they’ve reached the West finals in 18 years. James Harden scored 31 points.

PGA:  Rory McIlroy has won the Wells Fargo championship. He became the first two-time winner at the even after a dominating seven-shot victory. He finished with a 3-under 69 to finished at 21-under. The score shatters the tournament record by five strokes. McIlroy beat out Webb Simpson and Patrick Rodgers for the title.
