RED SOX, BEAVERS GOING TO GAME 5

With their bats against the wall, the Weyburn Beavers came out swinging and defeated Regina 4-0 in game four of the WMBL Saskatchewan Division final.  It tied their second round best-of-5 series 2-2 and the deciding game goes Wednesday night in Weyburn.

Another great crowd of close to 850 watched as Weyburn starter Scott Beever gnawed his way through the Regina Red batting order as he helped his team to a season saving victory. Beever gave up just four hits and walked five while striking out seven of the 24 Red Sox batters he faced.

Regina starter Parks Smithey worked 5.1 innings in his second WMBL playoff start. He was tagged with nine hits and two runs while fanning five.

The Red Sox also used a good portion of their bullpen as Kendal Daniels, Jeremy Sylvester, Mike Thill, Brandon Radmacher and Tyler Vavra saw relief action.

In addition to Beever’s steady start, Weyburn also got solid defence from their infield as they picked off two runners and turned a base loaded double play to keep Regina off the scoreboard. The Red Sox did have their chances in the game, leaving seven potential runs on base.

Reed Lavellee had a great day at the plate for the Beavers going three for three with a walk and a hit by pitch.

Regina countered with outfielder Jordan Schultz who had two hits including a double. He also made a fantastic diving catch in the top of the third inning to keep the game scoreless.

Weyburn will host Regina for the final game of the series Wednesday night at Tom Laing Park. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.

The winner of game five will move on to face the Lethbridge Bulls, who made short work of the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the Alberta final.
