GLENN DEALT TO MONTREAL

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have traded international quarterback Kevin Glenn to the Montreal Alouettes in exchange for a fifth round selection in the 2016 CFL Draft.
Glenn signed with the Riders as a free agent last February. In nine games this season, Glenn has completed 171 of 257 pass attempts for 2,174 yards and nine touchdowns with ten interceptions.

Kevin Glenn may just work for every CFL team before his career is done.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders dealt the veteran quarterback to the Montreal Alouettes, making the move before the league’s 4 pm ET trade deadline today.

At the age of 36, Glenn has seen it all in this league and has occupied all three spots on the quarterbacking depth chart. He has backed up and started in Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Calgary, Hamilton and B.C. In 2013, he was an expansion draft pick of Ottawa, yet never played a down for the RedBlacks. With the move to Montreal, only Edmonton and Toronto are missing from his resume, although on May 19, 2004, he was traded to the Argonauts before being shipped to Winnipeg later that very same draft day.

News of the trade was first reported by Gary Lawless.  The Riders are reportedly getting a mid- to late-round draft pick in return.

Glenn fills a massive need for the reeling Alouettes, who amazingly at 5-9 still have a shot at the playoffs because the West Division crossover remains in play. Montreal has had zero production of late at the position, and has gone through six different quarterbacks this season – the latest coming on Thanksgiving Monday when starter Rakeem Cato got injured and both Anthony Boone and Tanner Marsh were terribly ineffective.

An Alouettes source told Sportsnet Wednesday morning: “We definitely feel like (we’ve) got a shot now.”

It is believed Glenn was in Detroit when the trade went down, spending the Riders bye week in his hometown with family, making it more convenient to get him to Montreal. The Als are home to Hamilton on Sunday and it would be imperative to get Glenn into the fold at Olympic Stadium immediately to learn the offense. Sources said he was flying to Montreal on Wednesday morning.

Glenn and Alouettes co-offensive coordinator Ryan Dinwiddie were once teammates in Winnipeg, and at this point, Montreal GM/interim head coach Jim Popp really has nothing to lose by bringing in an established starter after the disaster that has unfolded with the team’s quarterbacks this season.

Glenn was pulled at half-time of the Riders loss in Hamilton on Friday, after it became quite clear the team’s playoff hopes were mathematically finished. With a 2-13 record and Saskatchewan in re-building mode following the firing of head coach Corey Chamblin and general manager Brendan Taman, gaining any asset for Glenn makes sense for the Roughriders.

Glenn began this season as the No. 2 to Darian Durant, was starter by the end of opening night when Durant tore his Achilles and then got injured. By the time he returned, the GM and coach that brought him to the franchise had been fired.

Back in February of this year, Glenn signed a one-year contract with Saskatchewan. CFL sources told Sportsnet the team was exploring a renegotiated deal following the front office shake-up, but it was not known whether or not the two sides came to terms.

Glenn, remarkably, has started 170 games in the league since coming to Canada in 2001. He has thrown for over 43,000 yards, including two seasons of more than 5,000 yards in 2007 (Winnipeg) and 2010 (Hamilton).

Heard it was for a late round CFL draft pick aka NOTHING.

Great work so far Rider Management. Pathetically overplayed veterans because they were the only ones dumb enough to believe they had a shot at the playoffs. Now, they'll be trading guys off for nothing when weeks ago, they could have flipped them for prospects and picks with value.

Embarrassing times ahead for Rider Nation with the morons we have in charge.

How the mighty have fallen! Things would have never been let to get this bad in a BC or Calgary, but yet, here in SK we sit on our hands, are told to trust those in charge, don't question things and be thankful for what we have because that's how we do it around here. After reading yesterday's quotes from club's VP where he states their long term business plan has no ties to their on field success made me not only laugh but also shake my head in disbelief. If your product is crap on the field you will… Read more »

A 5th round pick for Glenn at this stage is fair. I am guessing Shawn thinks we should have gotten a first, Bear Woods, SJ Green and the rights to seats at the blueline for 5 Habs games this year. Thanks for the input Shawn. Clean up the basement before Shawn gets home.

Realistically, what can you get for a 37 year old QB who's done nothing, the last two games, and really nothing all year. Must mean Riders have hopes for Durant coming back healthy and devloping Smith and Price. This is a good move. At least Smith scored some points the last two games. Cant say that about Glenn……

Even money right now on Glenn throwing for 375 and 4 TD's in the last game of the year against the Riders.

Good trade for the Riders. Something for nothing. Was not under contract after this year so may as well get something.

All the best Glenn. And hey, this trade could screw BC or Winnipeg out of a playoff spot so it's win win.

I can't believe people think they should have gotten so much more for a QG at the end of his career. If the Riders would have given up a first rounder for him there would have been riots. It is amazing how they think we should give nothing for a player, however other teams should give up everything to us. This is a trade that cannot be truly evaluated for three years. Thank Glenn for helping our young QBs and good luck.

Yes Shawn it is O'Day and Dyce fault they inherited a losing team with infinite salary and skill problems.

Trade Glenn to Hamilton we could get a couple really good players. One catch, Hamilton had zero interest. Fans (inaccurately) mock our previous GM for trading away Canadian picks then think we should get top return for our own imports.

An aging backup quarterback that is a free agent at years end. Great move for O'Day. He just eliminated the quarterback controversy and acquired an extra pick. Fifth rounders aren't automatic throw aways.
