RIDER COACHING/FRONT OFFICE MOVES

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today import linebacker Renauld Williams is retiring from the Canadian Football League.

Williams has accepted a position on the club’s football operations staff. He will immediately begin working as the team’s Director of Player Development.

In the role, Williams will assist players in adapting to their roles, both on and off the field, while living in the Regina community. With an emphasis on education and finances, the goal is to provide players with a sense of balance as they acclimatize to life as a CFL player.

Williams originally entered the CFL in 2007 when he signed with the Roughriders as a free agent. The Hofstra University product spent three seasons with the Riders before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers for 2010. Williams spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats before re-signing with the Riders in February, 2013 for his second stint with the Green and White.

Rey also had stops with the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns seeing action in six regular season NFL games.

Saskatchewan Roughriders Head Coach Corey Chamblin announced today that Avon Cobourne has joined the team’s staff as running backs coach for the 2014 season.

Cobourne joins the coaching ranks following a standout seven year Canadian Football League career. The product of West Virginia University played five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes after originally signing with the team prior to the 2006 season. He played his final two seasons in Hamilton after signing with the Tiger-Cats as a free agent in 2011.

The 35-year-old Cobourne is a two-time Grey Cup champion (2009, 2010) and was named 2009 Grey Cup Most Outstanding Player. He is also a three time East Division all-star (2008, 2009, 2012) also being named a CFL all-Star in 2009 after posting a career high 1,214 yards rushing.

Good move for the Riders in the sense that good companies promote from within whenever possible. One more reason to sign on with the green and white.

ps. Wonder if Coburne could play running back?

Need more info Rod. Is this because of his injury? Was he advised by medical staff to retire? This is a major hit to the D!! Like this team needs another major hit.

Wish he was on twitter so I could pass on a direct thanks and congrats. I knew this was a strong possiblility but it still sucks. He has always been one of my favs and I remember how disappointed I was when he left to the NFL, and then back to Hamilton. So happy we got to see him back with the Riders, win a Grey Cup, and now sticking with the team/community upon retiring. Such a great guy. Hope to cross paths with him sometime in the future at an appearance to say thanks. Rod, are you coming to… Read more »
