RIDERS ADD BOB CAMERON’S SON

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today that non-import kicker Brett Cameron and non-import fullback Matthew Burke have signed with the team.  Financial details were not released.

Cameron (6’1 – 194) signs with the Green and White after spending four seasons at the University of North Dakota. The Winnipeg native played 41 career collegiate games recording 7,559 yards on 182 punts for a 41.5 yard average. During his senior season Cameron recorded 13 punts over 50 yards.

The 23-year-old attended 2013 training camp with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers playing one preseason game.  I spoke with Cameron on Wednesday and asked him how it feels to be introduced as “the newest member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders”?

“It sounds awesome,” Cameron smiled.  “I’m very excited to be a part of the Roughrider organization.  It’s a pretty cool day!”

You’ve got to wonder how this news is going over in the Cameron household in Winnipeg.  Brett’s father Bob is a CFL legend, who spent his entire career with the Blue Bombers and holds CFL records for career games-played and career punting yards.  He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

“Everyone’s pretty excited about it,” the younger Cameron said.  “Obviously we’re from Winnipeg so we were big Bomber fans and obviously my Dad played for the Bombers.  But it’s pretty easy for the family to switch when there’s someone actually an active member of a team so I think they’ll all be wearing Rider stuff that’s for sure.”

It couldn’t have been easy growing up in his father’s shadow, particularly since he plays the same position but Brett says it as a positive.

“There’s definitely pressure but I knew what I was getting myself into.  But growing up it was awesome.  I got to go to practices going up and he retired when I was 12 or 13.  I remember being at practices, being on the sidelines for pregame warmups and those kinds of things.”

As for the Riders’ other signing, Mathew Burke (6’1 – 245), he joins the Riders after spending five seasons at Bishops University. As a senior in 2013, the 24-year-old native of Nova Scotia totaled 519 yards and two touchdowns on 91 carries while adding ten receptions for 76 yards.

"Another ex Bomber recruitment" – WTF does that mean? I hope you mean "good move picking up a talented player", not
"all ex-Bomber are crap", like, oh, I don't know, the MOST OUTSTANDING O-LINEMAN of 2013, Brendan Labatte?

You DO remember that our "ex-Bomber" GM Brendan Taman WON THE FREAKIN' 2013 GREY CUP, right?!

Roddy if you are screening comments out for bad language, you shouild screen tehm for sheer stupidity as well.

I love the pipeline the Riders are establishing with UND. It is a nice fit and in one of the only things I actually agreed with from Eric Tillman, he thought that people with Midwest and great plains experience would fit in well in Sask – it would seem that the conferences just south of the border are full of pail fed farmboys and humble people who are happy to play and be good citizens. Of course, we need our urban miscreants too. But, for the record, the fabric of the Riders has always been shaped by the good old… Read more »

As for Dressler, did he really need to go through the testing. Do these guys not know, with all of the technology and scouting, where he is at. If it was me, it would be,'sign me or im outta here.'

You would think at his age, going through a cattle auction would be a sign that he isn't really that big in their plans.

Punters are a pretty transient group in the CFL a January signing does not mean a job in July let alone October.

Hmmm, does this suggest that the Riders may be heading forward with a Canadian punter in mind and that the great American punter and free agent Ricky Schmidt may not be resigned?
