MOSAIC PLACE RECAP: RIDERS 38 REDBLACKS 14

OTTAWA – It was, to understate it, not a good start for the Ottawa Redblacks.

Darian Durant threw one touchdown and Will Ford ran for two more, all in the first quarter as the Saskatchewan Roughriders trounced the Redblacks 38-14 on Saturday night.

Chris Milo also had a 15-yard field goal in an opening quarter that saw the Roughriders build a 24-0 lead, en route to handing Ottawa its first home defeat in its second home game.

“We’ve had some slow starts earlier in the year so to jump out like that and get some early touchdowns on the board was huge,” said Durant. “Our defence has been playing lights out pretty much every game this year. We just have to make sure we do our part to help them out.”

In their inaugural season, the Redblacks (1-4) were hoping to build on the 18-17 win over the Toronto Argonauts in their home opener two weeks ago. Any hope of that was quickly dashed with Ottawa’s inability to move the ball early or stop Durant and the Roughriders’ offence.

“We’ve been in every game and every game we’ve found a way to shoot ourselves in the foot,” said Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris, who threw two interceptions in the first quarter that led to 10 points.

“Those two early turnovers really hurt us and put us in a hole but we had ample opportunity to make plays and we didn’t make plays. They made plays and that’s why Saskatchewan is the defending Grey Cup champions and we’re a work in progress.”

Ottawa held the Roughriders (3-2) to just six second-half points on a pair of field goals (34 and 42) from Milo, but managed little offence of their own.

Thomas DeMarco came on in relief of Burris at quarterback midway through the fourth quarter and led the Redblacks on a 75-yard drive, all passing, that ended with a five-yard touchdown pass to Jamill Smith.

“That’s why we took him in the expansion draft because he showed he could play last year in BC and we all think he’s a good quarterback,” Redblacks coach Rick Campbell said of DeMarco.

“Henry is our starting quarterback and I was proud of Henry is he battled all the way until the end. He was trying to make plays until the end. Thomas came in and made some good throws and good football teams need multiple quarterbacks that can play and Thomas showed that he could.”

The Roughriders led 32-7 at the half in what was to that point a very unusual game, Saskatchewan’s 24-point first quarter included.

Early in the second quarter Brett Maher attempted a 31-yard field goal to get the Redblacks their first points of the game and although the kick had the distance, it didn’t have the accuracy hitting the upright.

On Ottawa’s next possession Maher lined up for another field goal attempt, this time from 50 yards. The kick was short and Tristan Jackson ran it back 112 yards for a touchdown. The ensuing conversion and single off the kickoff gave the Roughriders a 32-0 lead.

“We started fast and we could have finished a little better but we did a good job as a team,” Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin said.

“I thought we would win the game but I didn’t think the score would be 38-14, so we’re excited about the outcome. I just want to see us be more consistent in all three phases.”

On the next series the Redblacks got their first points of the game in a very unconventional way.

Facing a third-and-three, DeMarco, who came on to punt, delivered a 73-yard punt that rolled its way to the back of the Roughriders’ end zone. Dobson Collins rushed the length of the field and jumped on the loose ball for the CFL’s first onside punt recovery for a touchdown since 1999 when Scott McKenzie did it with the Calgary Stampeders.

Before that, no one had completed an onside punt recovery since Dick Adams of the Ottawa Rough Riders did it in 1973.

Well played game Riders. Gotta teach those Americans the on side man rule. Brackenridge could have easily coveted the ball except he trotted to the ball. Heck even if you kick it out the end zone.
Love the Tristan Jackson return 111 yards. Didn't like the play for the 3rd down gamble before the half.
Just glad the Riders started fast and put the game away in the 1st Qtr.

Once again it is clear tonite that

1. Darian sucks.
2. Richie Hall's defence is atrocious
3. Corey is an idiot
4. Taman can't find anyone and just got lucky when it comes to guys like Swain and Peters and that Ford was a sign of desperation.

Sarcasm off

CMON Rider haters, where ya gonna be tonight or are you just saving it hoping they stink on Thursday.

SUCK IT!!

Isn't the new Ottawa Stadium called "TD Place Stadium" not Mosaic Stadium?Strong effort especially in first half. Congrats to solid Defensive play and especially to Tristan Jackson who had a night to remember. Not excited about the play call on 3rd and a bit with a pass to Ford near end of half. Why try a boneheaded play like that instead of kicking and pinning them deep? That play could have ignited Ottawa.Fortunately it did not.Clearly Sunseri needs more snaps. If DD goes down it would be a disaster.Swain,Bagg and Getzlaf looked good. Ford ok.DD was bang on with his passes… Read more »

"Not excited about the play call on 3rd and a bit with a pass to Ford near end of half. "

I disagree. That was the perfect call. The running back just has to catch the ball. You know, like we see done routinely in high school games. Easy play for the running back to catch and he was wide open and would have easily got the first down.

The riders played a complete game tonight. The returns by Jackson were great. The Riders offense was impressive. The defense is showing its the best in the league. All in all this was one of the better games I have seen them play this year. But in that regard Ottawa looks like and expansion team. Cant wait until Thursday to see the Battle of the prairies take place.

So annoying…maybe Doubles should start acting fragile so he can get some of the calls the other QBs get..grrr

Still, even in a route like that, it's still the 'Burris' show. Chris and Glen made him the center of attention the entire game excessively. That was so annoying. You'd think the 'winning' quarterback, who had almost a 300 yard game would get more recognition and mentioned more. Ridiculous. Flag thrown on the broadcasting tonight. Oh well, Durant shows more and more that he's a great qb and he can get well deserved recognition in Ridernation!

Suitor is getting more and more annoying. He was completely clueless on the trick Ottawa TD saying it would be negated because the other guy was guilty on no yards. Its obvious someone is in his ear explaining the rules to him. Forde would be better suited to sit alongside Cuthbert than Suitor IMO.

Agree about Suitor. Cuthbert and LaPo would be the best combo. I'm really having a hard time listening to Rod Black. He doesn't know football.

Heard somebody and Scott Schultz talking pre-game. Schultz was asked (about roughing the passer penalties) if Ricky Ray draws more than DD or Rielly. Schultz didn't have the guts to tell the truth and took the politically correct route and claimed he didn't know. Well I'm telling you that Durrant was hit below the knees in the pocket and no flag Scott. I'll also guarantee that RR gets 15 yards for that play.
Other than that great game by the Riders especially Tristan.

Just a few things: I think the Riders lost interest in this game in the 2nd half as did most of us. Was it just me or did Referee Kim Murphy seem clueless most of the game? Richie is going to have to blitz more against WPG, much more. Was this the first game Kory Sheets wasn't mentioned or did I miss it? Burris is done like dinner. I liked DeMarco when he was in B.C. Not sure Ford is the answer. He doesn't seem to bounce out of the pile as good as he should. Finally, the team that… Read more »

Murphy did pretty well I thought. On the combo offside / no yards call he has to wait for the kicking team to decide if they will take the offside penalty. If so, there will be a re kick. I think it took a while for Ott to see that declining the penalty would be better. That way the kick stands and there is only a five yd penalty against them.
He did miss seeing that the Ott player was onside but that is easy to do in a quick kick situation. They got it right on replay.

Still not convinced we have the stud running back. Nobody we have now or have had is at the same level as last season. A couple fumbles shouldn't have put Allen on the shelf. He is a bigger more punishing back than anyone we have. I think we better ramp up our physical play a bit more.

You know that Green Zone show is pathetic when Suitor has to plug that he’s on it on the TSN broadcast. If he is their football “expert” and makes football related comments that are that clueless on tv and radio, I would drive myself into the ditch listening to the show.

There still seems to be some killer instinct. That RebBlacks team was ripe for having 50-60 points scored against it. We took our foot off the pedal and that's not a good trait. Like most I still wonder what kind of team this is. We've beat Hamilton, Toronto and Ottawa…really!! The only western team we've faced we lost to. Right now everyone in the west is better than we are. Hoping for Dressler to return isn't the solution. I fully expect this team will be eaten up by Winnipeg this Thursday since we're not at their level, ditto for Calgary… Read more »

You guys out there that hate listening to Black, Ford , Suitor and the rest of the televised announcers should do like I do. Turn the sound off and listen to Rod and Crew on the Radio. Much, much better.

Holy cripes Debbie downer. We just had a big win last night and all you can do is bitch about how much we suck and how we are going to get cursed by peg on Thursday. It's people like you who give all of Rider Nation a bad name. This isn't a province for negativity anymore. Do us all a favor and beat it.

The tone of all these comments leads me to believe that you're all pessimists and cynics. You all would find something to bitch and cry about no matter what. It says you are rather unhappy people in life in and outside of football.

Have you looked at Winnipeg's schedule?? They've mostly played the soft East division teams!
