RIDERS ANNOUNCE MESSAM’S SIGNING

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed running back Jerome Messam on Wednesday and added defensive back Ciante Evans to their practice roster.

The six-foot-three 245-pound Messam is a four-year CFL veteran. The 29-year-old Toronto native had 565 rushing yards on 121 carries last season with the Montreal Alouettes.

Messam had an all-star season with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2011. He rushed for 1,057 yards and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian.

In 59 career regular-season games with B.C., Edmonton and Montreal, Messam has 1,882 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 381 carries while adding 698 receiving yards on 71 catches.

Messam comes to Regina with a troubled history however Rider head coach Corey Chamblin said he told Messam in their first meeting that “the past is the past” and that he’ll get a fresh start in Saskatchewan.

Messam said he hopes to work his way into the starting tailback job and that he’ll be on the roster for Saturday’s home game against BC however he’ll primarily be a special teams contributor.

Evans, 21, joined the Riders after spending four seasons with the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Some people are all over the fact that he has had some trouble and that's why this is a bad move. Chamblin seems like the kind of coach that can take those kinds of players and reign them in, straighten them out. I guess the proof will be in the pudding but I trust him. Messam can be a valuable asset for us if he puts the BS aside and works his butt off.

Having a powerful runner like Jerome on the team is a big deal! Being a Canadian, he has the potential to give us the type of advantage enjoyed by the Stamps with Cornish. It solves problems with the ratio now and down the road if he can be a starter and if he can return to the level of production he had when in Edmonton.
Best of luck to Jerome and may he have a great future in Green and White.

Rod; Different subject but still Riders. How is Xavier Fulton? He looked to be injured during the fiasco in Toronto and had a considerable limp.
