RIDERS EXTEND FOUR
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed four non-import veterans to contract extensions. Receivers Chris Getzlaf and Rob Bagg, as well as offensive linemen Brendon LaBatte and Dominic Picard have re-upped with the team.
Chris Getzlaf just completed his seventh CFL season with the Riders after being acquired from Hamilton in August of 2007. The Regina native started 17 regular season games in 2013, on his way to being named a CFL West Division All-Star after recording 63 receptions for 1,045 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also the Roughriders 2013 nominee as Most Outstanding Canadian. The 30-year-old Getzlaf added three receptions for 78 yards and was named the Most Outstanding Canadian in the 101st Grey Cup.
The University of Regina product will enter 2014 with 299 career receptions for 4,704 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Rob Bagg is a six year Rider veteran having played 69 career regular season games. After missing most of the 2012 season due to injury, the Queen’s graduate bounced back in 2013 with 34 receptions for 430 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games before adding five catches for 23 yards and a touchdown in three postseason games. He was named CFL Canadian Player of the Week in week 4.
The 28-year-old Kingston, ON native will enter the 2014 season with 168 career receptions for 2,365 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Brendon LaBatte had a memorable 2013 season; his second with the Green and White. In addition to winning the 101st Grey Cup, the Weyburn, SK native played all 18 regular season games at left guard and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and a CFL All-Star. The six year CFL veteran has been named a CFL Divisional All-Star five times.
The University of Regina product was originally selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 1st round (6th overall) of the 2008 CFL Draft.
Dominic Picard will be entering his third season with the Riders after joining the team as a free agent during the 2012 off season. The 31-year-old started all 18 regular season games and three post-season games at centre, helping pave the way for the Riders explosive ground game during the 2013 season.
The Sainte-Foy, Quebec native was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 3rd round (23rd overall) of the 2006 CFL Draft. He has played 120 career regular season games.
Getzlaf, Bagg and Picard agreed to extensions that keep them under contract through the 2015 season while LaBatte’s is good through 2016.
Great news happy to see our o line staying intact Getz and Bagg no brainers as well. Years hoping for a repeat in 2014

Great start to the offseason!
Great News!!! Only a few more to go.
Uh, now we have to protect them in the expansion draft!
Why not agree to the deals in principle, decide not to protect them, and then announce the deals on February 15?
Am I missing something here? This looks like a really dumb move to me.

Good resignings, I hope Picard took a pay cut because I thought his play was declining a bit as the season went on.
Hopefully Watman can keep getting better. Maybe Brett Jones will want to come back in a couple years!
Brett Jones, come back ? where ?

Bagg ????
Lewis Grant,
These guys were not gonna be free agents come Feb 15, as they were already under contract for next year. It's essentially an extension past that.
So yeah, good move!
Lewis all four were already under contract before the extensions so we would have had to consider protecting them anyway.
ditto…Lewis Grant

oh, OK, my bad. Then three cheers! Labatte especially was a giant for us this year.
Glad it didn't take us long to re-tool after the retirements of Makowsky and O'Day. I never had strong feelings one way or the other about Taman, but he sure seems to be silencing the haters.

For the bright spot (not) using STOP
Chris Getzlaf started out as a TiCat. Just because a team didnt draft a player dosent mean squat!
Brett Jones is a smart young man and wants to be a Doctor! So who knows, he might be an MD and leave football behind. Or he could just as easily be a Rider in a couple years. Perfect timing for Picard's retirement. Everything happens for a reason.
