ROUGHRIDERS GO WITH CHAPDELAINE
On Friday the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the hiring of Jacques Chapdelaine as offensive co-ordinator.
The veteran coach has spent 13 seasons coaching in the Canadian Football League after originally entering as special teams co-ordinator and receivers coach with the Calgary Stampeders in 2001. The next season Chapdelaine was named as the Stamps offensive co-ordinator.
The 53-year-old went on to spend ten of the next 11 seasons (2003-2006, 2008-2013) with the BC Lions including six years as offensive co-ordinator. He spent the 2007 season with the Edmonton Eskimos as assistant head coach and offensive co-ordinator.
Through eight seasons as the head signal caller, Chapdelaine’s teams have compiled a 79-64-1 record, playing in four division finals, winning two grey Cups.
Chapdelaine joins the Green and White after spending last year as head coach at his alma mater Simon Fraser University in the NCAA’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference. As a player, Chapdelaine starred with the SFU Clan in the 1980’s before moving on to a seven year career in the CFL making stops in BC, Montreal, Hamilton and Calgary.
Good hire, but the Riders will now need to make some changes on the O-line. Chapdelaine’s pass protection schemes don’t suit Picard at center or Heenan playing Tackle.
Dickenson, Pierce, Lulay were all mobile QB’s and they got bounced around and injured a lot. Pass protection was a weakness of the Riders O-line last year, and personnel upgrades are required on the line to keep Durant upright and healthy in 2015.
So, we replaced one old stubborn co-ordinator with another old stubborn co-ordinator. He better get a quarterback coach or we will see a repeat of last season
I remember him having a rift with players at times, especially the year he was in Edmonton; it wasn't a good relationship there so this could be interesting…
Some people have no clue…..Chapdelaine is a brilliant coach. Two years ago I was at a football seminar and he was the speaker. Give the man a chance for goodness sake!
Stomper
Etch just about lost us the west final on the last play of the game BC scores. A boneaded defensive scheme just about sank us… thanks but no thanks to Etch
The Rock
A masterful hire? What a load of bull!!!
Give me a break! Jacque's schemes are telegraphed and stink of old school mentality. Chamblin had all kinds of opportunity to hire someone that brings new twists, confusing schemes for the defence and an all around refreshing change. Instead we get an OC that was fired from his previous 2 CFL stints.
Paul Lapolice would have been an upgrade to this hire and even Paul's offence has seen its better days.
Chamblin hire someone (Paul) who has strong proven credential looking over his shoulders?
If Darian was in fact part of the interview/hiring process, then this should work.
After the horrible year in Winnipeg, it will probably be sometime in ever until Etch gets hired as an DC in the CFL – his best bet may be in the college ranks.
good move, now get some receivers.
I see lots of comments removed; I guess they feel like I do about this hire and they're not toeing the party line and raving about how great this year will be.
If the Darian and Coach Chamblin are good with this then the naysayers can go to —-.
With Chapdelaine running the show Darian will be on the injury before Labour Day.
The fact this gentleman was let go from a couple of teams is irrelevant because that's what happens in the CFL. iF memory serves me right Cortez was fired from Hamilton and effectively from Saskatchewan. You can't hold previous firing against a guy. I do agree however that there should be an injection of new blood, new ideas and schemes. It begins to feel that the CFL is becoming one team that changes uniforms every season. The movement of players, recycling of coaches etc leaves this fan rather cold.
RIDERS MAKING ALL THE RIGHT MOVES – SHOULD BE A EXCELLENT YEAR
Merry Christmas Rod!
Let's give the guy a chance first. He certainly said the right things when interviewed. Taylor Shire (sp?) was very impressive as an emergency co-host.
The CFL used to be exciting. Innovative play calling and high scoring. What happened? Maybe the above poster is right. No new blood or ideas. Just recycled players and coaches. Chap better think about some innovation or not only he but us fans will be gone too.
"The CFL used to be exciting" ??? Like in the last ten years when BC had an electrifying offence that was a threat to score from everywhere on the field.
My last memory of Jacques is the '13 West semi where the riders d couldn't get lulay off the field. If DD doesn't take over that game the dream season is over.
Following that the lions 'upgraded' to Khari Jones.
gr8 news for the "green" program….after all,it's all about "recycling"! jaq went out with a whimper in b.c. ,fans were all over him for his conservative, predictable calls….weak hire corey..I now begin to question the captain of this ship??? etch for d cord. corey?…be "green"…Recycle!!
Bill Belichec was fired from Cleveland, Pete Carroll was fired from New England. They turned out to be OK coaches. Rider fans need to R-E-L-A-X to quote A Rodgers.
