RIDERS’ GOLDING SUSPENDED FOR PED VIOLATION

TORONTO (December 19, 2016) – Saskatchewan Roughrider linebacker Marvin Golding has been suspended for two games after testing positive for a banned substance (dehydrochlormethyltestosterone), under the drug policy of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA).

Golding’s suspension will come into effect once he is next eligible to play a regular season game.

The CFL and CFLPA announced expanded testing for performance enhancing drugs in April, ahead of the 2016 season.

Players who test positive will face a two game suspension for a first doping violation, a nine game suspension for a second violation, a one-year suspension for a third violation, and a lifetime ban for a fourth violation.

Under the policy, a suspended player cannot participate in regular season or playoff games. It is up to their Club to determine whether that player can participate in other team activities, such as practices and meetings.

All players will be subject to mandatory drug testing once testing positive and will participate in an assessment and clinical evaluation to determine if they need additional counselling.

The policy mandates a total number of random tests equal to 100% of the players in the CFL. Random testing is ongoing and is conducted year round.

Statement from Riders linebacker Marvin Golding:
I would like to apologize to my family, friends and most importantly the Saskatchewan Roughriders organization. They have given me an opportunity to play professional football and I disappointed them by taking a banned substance. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept my suspension delivered by the Canadian Football League. Lastly I would like to apologize to the young athletes that look up to us and have aspirations of playing professional sports. I promise to be a better role model moving forward.

Statement from Riders General Manager and Head Coach Chris Jones:
We were extremely disappointed to learn that Marvin had committed a violation regarding a banned substance found during a random test. Marvin has taken full responsibility for his actions and we believe he will take the necessary steps to ensure this does not happen again. As an organization we support the policy to prevent the use of performance enhancing drugs set forth by the CFL and CFLPA in order to improve player safety and create a level playing field among athletes.

with Jones system of a record breaking season of player signed and then cut. Has me wondering who this guy is. If he played more than 1 game then excuse my lack of knowledge or should I say caring about this current team. It's hard to cheer for a team in shambles.

I wonder if either of you would take Brandon Banks on your team. You know one of the handful of other finely tuned athletes in the league that have tested positive for PED use.

Why should we excuse your lack of kowledge or caring. If you didn't care you wouldn't be commenting. All you dipsh*ts will be first in line on Albert Street when JOnes is toting the Cup home. I hope he rides with his middle finger sticking way up!

Re Anonymous above…Brandon Banks was positive for a recreational drug not a PED so check your facts before bashing someone about lack of knowledge or caring. Perhaps the lack of leadership shown by Jones when violating rules re practice roster violations (and on and on) was an example to the team that you can try anything as long as you can get away with it. And I hope you're correct that Jones will tote the cup home with his middle finger sticking up because I'm almost at the point where I'd love to see him tarred and feathered and rode… Read more »

Anon #3 … Who are you? Do you work for the current Rider administration? Anon 2 never disrespected the player or that of breaking the rules. He simply mentioned he dosent know the player and is having trouble cheering for a team in shambles. He's not alone! We cheer for a team for many reasons. One of pride or how the team makes us feel after a win. Or how given the same tools to work with we come out near the top or win it all. The Jones administration so far has not delivered any positive feelings of any kind.… Read more »

All that cap space that Murphy spoke about quite certainly went to players like Muamba and Roosevelt.
