RIDERS OVER THE CAP A SMIDGE
TORONTO (CP) – The Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders were the only team to surpass the CFL’s 4.4-million salary cap in 2013, the league announced Wednesday.
According to the CFL, the Roughriders’ spent $4,417,975 in salaries last year. As per league rules, the club will be fined $17,975, or one dollar for each dollar it was over the cap.
The CFL conducts field audits of all eight clubs twice per year, once during the regular season and once following its completion.
And with no team exceeding the cap by more than $100,000, there will be no change to the order of selection for the CFL draft on May 13. Presently, the expansion Ottawa Redblacks have the first overall pick.
Wonderful job by management to keep us this close, especially considering the players they brought in, and the fact we won the CUP!!!
So what's that, three consecutive years as the only team to exceed the cap?
haha great salary "cap" image provided with the article, thanks for the chuckle!
No big deal. Pocket change.
Actually 2014 marks one year in a row over the cap for us chump.

Who cares if it was 1 or 3 years over in a row over the cap. We won a Grey Cup $17,000 is peanuts in the big picture of things and I'm sure BT and Hoppy are more than happy to fork that over to the league
Excellent management of the salary cap… 0.004% over is hardly anything to mention. With the way we loaded up on talent, I am impressed with where we ended up in the SMS. I would be interested to see where other teams ended up in their spending (how close they were to the $4.4M).
With Individual owners of teams (privately owned) are they still allowed to offer personal service contracts to players as in the past? If so does those offerings show in the salary cap?
When the whiners come out of the woodwork (or this blog) about how the Riders are over the cap just ask them if they are Heat, Lakers or even Yankees fans
I can't believe how revved up people on other sites are about the salary cap issue. I consider myself to have pretty high standards and values, and I truly don't think it's a big deal at all. Maybe I'm just used to the government and big corporations overspending by way more than .4%.
The amount that my team went over the cap is Peanuts!
ROD!!!
have times ever changed, in the 80’s the Riders couldn’t spare 18k to bring players in, now they’re paying an 18k fine because they paid their players too much.
I live in a town of 5,000 people and our so called new library is already over a million dollars over budget and growing daily
A million dollars over budget? Guess the old library only had “Running a profitable Construction Business” books.
Paul Friesen of Winnipeg Sun was whining 2 day about this. Maybe he should cover a real football team
