RIDERS PRACTICE AT U OF R

The Saskatchewan Roughriders held Day 1 of their practice week at the U of R Rams field on Wednesday due to clean-up from Sunday’s Guns N’ Roses concert at Mosaic Stadium.

Here are some notes:

– Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones said they added Canadian kicker Brett Lauther to add depth at that position. Back-up kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk is currently on the 6-game Injured List.

– The team also announced this week they’ve released defensive end Mike McAdoo, who was acquired from Hamilton in the Ricky Collins trade. Jones said McAdoo wasn’t in football shape.

– Rookie punt returner Christion Jones was injured in Friday’s 54-31 win at Edmonton. Veterans Nic Demski and Chad Owens split reps at that position and Demski said they haven’t been told who will return punts in Sunday’s Labour Day Classic versus Winnipeg (2:00 pm, TSN, 620 CKRM).

– Asked about the team’s current 2-game winning streak, Jones said he’s been saying all year that they have a good team. It was just a matter of putting all facets together in a game and they’ve done that in their past two victories.

– Asked if the Riders have turned the corner, Jones said they hope so.

– Jones was asked about the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ controversial hiring of reviled coach Art Briles this week but he said “It’s not my place to say”. Quarterback Kevin Glenn was asked about it as well, and his response was “No comment”.

– Meanwhile Glenn threw some gas on the fire that is the debate over who has the CFL’s loudest fans: Winnipeg or Saskatchewan?

“Oh Rider fans. Most definitely. It’s just the way it is,” Glenn answered immediately. “I hate to say it and have all the Winnipeg fans see it, because I played there. But I’ll be honest. It’s Rider fans.”

I asked Glenn if he would answer the same way if he was still playing for Winnipeg.

“Probably so but I probably would’ve lied and said Bomber fans,” Glenn continued. “The Bomber fans understand, seriously. If I was in blue, I would’ve lied and said Bomber fans, but it would’ve been a lie.”

– Let the games begin!
