RIDERS RE-SIGN T. GEORGE, WEBSTER, RELEASE MCCALLUM, JACKSON

Tearrius George

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced international defensive lineman Tearrius George and national defensive back Matt Webster have signed extensions to remain with the team. As per club policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

George (6’4 – 277) will return for his ninth CFL season and sixth with the Riders. The Kansas State product originally joined the Green and White as a free agent in February 2011. Through 111 career regular season games, George has collected 181 defensive tackles, 42 quarterback sacks, and six forced fumbles.
George was named a West Division All-Star in 2013 and 2014, and also won his first career Grey Cup as a member of the Riders in 2013.
Matt Webster

Webster (5’11 – 195) will remain with the Riders for his third CFL season after originally being selected by the team in the 5th round (39th overall) in the 2014 CFL Draft. The 23-year-old Queen’s University product has played 25 regular season games through his first two seasons, picking up 25 defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles.

Webster was eligible to become a free agent on February 9th.
The Riders also announced they have released national kicker Paul McCallum and international defensive back Tristan Jackson
McCallum returned to the Riders in July, 2015, playing 14 regular season games last season. He had previously been with the team for 12 seasons from 1994-2005 before spending the next nine seasons with the BC Lions.
Jackson spent the last five seasons with the Riders after being acquired from the Eskimos in a 2011 trade. He is a veteran of eight CFL seasons.

I was kind of surprised TJack was not released with the others. All of the defensive backfield was too short and too slow. I assume Kendell Lawrence will be our returner.

Good luck to Paul McCallum and Tristan Jackson, unfortunately not a surprise but they were great players over the years and should be recognized as such.

While I do support the new football staff, the last few moves make very little sense. Why did we trade the productive, young DT and resign the unproductive 33 yr old DT? George might have one more season left in him, and the OT we acquired from Toronto is 2nd rate at best. There had better be a plan to sign Shologan, Capricoti and Evan in FA or we will have the same problems as last season, an unproductive D-line and no national depth.

The days of 5'8''DBs and 40 year old kickers is over. I can't see either of them signing anywhere else but best of luck to them in real life.

Gee anonymous I didn't see your PHD on football. Sorry we didn't check with you when we made the trade and resigned a productive player. Also sorry that we didn't realize that the player we traded away was so short in stature. Again we must sincerely apologize

You would be better off if you listened to your intellectual superiors because you are obviously very stupid.
If you think George has any future in this league beyond next season and Monroe is too short, you seriously need your head examined.
Numbers don't lie. Look at the stats and do the research before you shoot your mouth off.
By your idiot logic Dressler and Smith shouldn't play because of their height.
You are truly a very, very, very stupid person.

Oh, and if you want to disagree, do so in a respectful manner. More than willing to discuss things in an intelligent fashion, but weak sarcasm will be replied to in kind.

The Riders defence was the worst in the league and that's a fact! In light of that fact there is little wonder that a great many players were either sent packing or traded. Someone who supposedly does well on this bad a defence is still a questionable commodity. Jones job is to make us better and he will. Once the team is compiled and wearing green, all this petty BS won't matter. Every time there is turnover you hear the same folks beefing about the same stuff. If you play 6 good games here, some feel you are an invaluable… Read more »

By no means is Monroe an invaluable asset, but at this point he has a much great upside than George. Another point is that the O-lineman the Riders received from the Argos is a FA in February, so this could be the Shea Emery deal version two.

So what was it Rod, why the change for your point #5 ???

Did you actually have a change of heart… similar to that of the Grinch who suddenly developed a heart at Christmas time? Or was it simply the idea of losing sponsors and guests to your blog and radio show?

TJ not a surprise as he looked old and slow in the D last year. Too bad. He was a shut down corner and good returner until last year. Good luck Tristan and thanks for your contribution to the Riders. Stay tuned as you might be considered for the Plaza in future.

George – an unproductive defensive tackle? I will give you he had a down year in '15, who didn't! Anyone know why he had a down year after being named an all-star in 13 and 14? Exactly! A cap friendly player (extension people, figure it out) that adds depth at DT or DE.

Monroe – great bright spot that had the crowd going late in season. Four sacks. Didn't he have three in one game?

3-15 and an entirely different coaching staff and scheme. Simply put, Monroe didn't fit scheme. End of story.

You're probably right. Jones wants size and George most likely resigned for a song. Maybe we'll see TG revitalized for awhile if we draft the DT from Manitoba. The problem really could be TG spent most of the season coaching Connop and being double teamed because Connop shouldn't be starting.
Still wonder if age hasn't caught up with TG, he had less tackles than Dressler at one point in 2015.

By making all these moves Chris Jones and company has made it clear to every pending free agent in the league … we need players!

Great move to make guys want to wait and see what Sask says in February. If not, you are no further behind anyways.

Actually weak sarcasm is very much appreciated and enjoyed, at least down here, and should be encouraged at all times. Strong sarcasm is even better.

Seems like recently there has been an over abundance of trolls from Winnipeg Calgary Edmonton Spamilton, who have nothing to offer but nauseous drivel. Makes you wonder doesn't it? On the Internet people can be whoever they want. Why do you think those trolls all choose to be so stupid?

Happy Holidays to all the Rider fans and thanks Rod for keeping us far away fans in the loop.
