STAMPEDERS 19 ROUGHRIDERS 10

REGINA – Rene Paredes did his best to kick the Saskatchewan Roughriders while they were down.

The Calgary Stampeders kicker booted four field goals in a 19-10 victory and made sure the Riders’ woeful season continued on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd at Mosaic Stadium.

Calgary (5-1-1) has won eight straight games over their West Division rivals, including a 35-15 victory at McMahon Stadium the previous week, and occupy first place in the division.

“Maybe it’s time they (Roughriders) should move into the new stadium,” said Stampeders defensive end Charleston Hughes, who registered three sacks in Saturday’s game.

“It wasn’t pretty, the guys know we have to play better, but the good thing for us is that we won the game and that’s all that matters,” Paredes added.

It has been a tumultuous week in Saskatchewan. The team lost its third consecutive game to sit at 1-6 and in last place in the nine-team league.

The league also fined the Riders $60,000 on Thursday for roster violations, in addition to a $26,000 salary cap deduction. Though, players in the Roughriders locker room said that didn’t serve as a distraction.

“That didn’t factor into any of this, not even a little bit,” said Riders linebacker Greg Jones. “The guys in this locker room are still the guys who show up for work every day. No matter what happens during the week off of the field, we still have to show up and do our jobs. We still have to step up and play.”

Paredes kicked field goals from 46 yards, 40 yards and 25 yards, all in the first half, as Calgary built an early 9-0 lead. Paredes has converted 19 consecutive field goals this season.

The Riders finally provided an answer on the final play of the first half when backup quarterback Mitchell Gale plunged one yard for a touchdown.

Calgary led 9-7 at halftime and added to the lead on the first possession of the third quarter when Jerome Messam scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

A 54-yard field goal from Saskatchewan’s Quinn Van Gylswyk followed Calgary’s score, but it was the only scoring from the home team in the second half.

The Riders did penetrate the Calgary red zone late in the third quarter, but quarterback Darian Durant fumbled on the 20-yard line and the threat was washed out.

“We had our opportunities,” Durant said. “We just have to be better offensively and score more points. We can’t turn the ball over, can’t drop balls? just a lot of missed opportunities when we got in scoring range.”

Van Gylswyk had an opportunity with two minutes remaining in the game to cut Calgary’s six-point lead in half when he lined up for a 40-yard field-goal attempt. His kick hit the post and bounced out.

Calgary immediately took advantage when Bo Levi Mitchell connected with Simon Charbonneau on a 63-yard passing play that took the ball to Saskatchewan’s 22-yard line.

Paredes then put Calgary’s win on ice with his fourth field goal, a 21-yard effort, late in the fourth quarter to give his team a nine-point advantage at 19-10.

“It doesn’t matter where or when I get my chances,” Paredes said. “When they call on me to kick, I go in there and do my job. I do like kicking here because it’s loud and the fans are always on you. It feel good when you make them.”

Mitchell’s streak of 21 straight games in which he has thrown a touchdown pass came to an end on Saturday. Though, he did pass for 298 yards. His favourite target was Marquay McDaniel, who had eight receptions for 110 yards.

Durant completed 24-of-37 pass attempts for 267 yards. He also rushed for a game-high 74 yards.

Both teams will hit the road next week. Saskatchewan, still searching for its first win on the road this season, will take the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Calgary will travel west to play the B.C. Lions.

Meanwhile TSN cameras caught an exchange between Roughriders Head Coach & GM Chris Jones and Stampeders Head Coach Dave Dickenson after their postgame handshake.  The cameras seemed to show some heated words in the discussion.

Asked about it on 620 CKRM’s postgame show, Jones declined to explain what was said.

“Dave’s a friend of mine,” Jones said.  “And that’s gonna remain between me and Dave.”

Meanwhile Scott Mitchell of the Calgary Sun reported Jones said something to the effect of, “Win with some class.”

Well, at least this one wasn't the fault of the defence. Until the end of the game at least.

On the bright side, Onyemata, Bouka and Brett Jones are not doing very well in their respective NFL camps.

Perhaps we can maybe pick up Jones and Bouka in September, or earlier.

The Riders will have a couples places for them to stay, but might not have the cap space.

Just saying.....

Didn't expect to win, so why does it hurt so bad?

BEAT IN THE TRENCHES.

Fix the lines and everything else improves.

The O-line was beat off the ball every play, including our touchdown.

Fix that pathetic D-line and all of a sudden the DBs would be better.

Dline is the weakest part of the team. Defence suffers because of it.

Jones showed his Real Class when he verbally attacked Dickenson at the end of the game.
Riders almost played good enough to win this one and a couple of injured returnees probably would have helped them do just that.

After the long pass near the end of the game…….Bo Baby is running down the field along the Riders bench running his dumb mouth. Does the same when he comes to the bench and has to be
restrained from Messam as some fan likely would have clobbered him.

Jones tells Dickenson that BO should win with Class.

Dickenson then tells Jones to f himself. Real classy. Of course the Stumps run to the media and cry too.

True but they still must be taking some satisfaction from the dismal start.

Chris Jones is frustrated no doubt but he'll recover quickly. Every week I see small improvements and his plan will begin to show on the field. Darian looked good tonight and it starts with him. Receivers hang on to balls and next week we get a win.

Darian did not look "good". He looked average. He threw 4 or 5 balls that were horribly inaccurate. He also had several dropped balls and put the two together and they have 10 points.

To the 7th poster;

Chamblin and Taman are the ones that decided to cut Jonathon Jennings so they could keep Brett Smith and Tino Sunseri.

3rd place is usually 9-9. At this point they need to go 8-3 to make the playoffs. They are getting better but realistically its going to be too late for this year. Unless they go on a 4 game win streak starting against Hamilton the season is over.

At least Huff new how to keep his players under control, unlike DICKenson. Calgary wouldn't know class if the school bell rang.

Offensive line is offensive to watch, give doubles a chance to throw rather than him hurrying his throws, come on guys, defensive line, average at best this week. Doubles cant do it all, he needs help, catch the ball when he throws it to you….

looks like the bombers are going to win the very last labour day classic at ol' mosaic.

Are you telling me DD wouldn't celebrate threading the needle late in the game to seal the deal?..

you gotta love CJ though, guy will do anything to win

O line so so but Stamps O line helps make QB RB and receivers jobs easier. Our D line not there until DBs don't need help. DD did as well as he could. Be careful taking the Stamps media as the source of the coaches comments. Nothing compares to attending a Rider game even when we lose. If we lose that then that's on us. So keep the faith.(Jeez I hate losing to the Stamps)

For sure this year is lost already, Calgary brought .." C".. game to Mosaic and riders couldn't win.
Trade doubles like we did messam last year, at least let him have a shot at winning a cup somewhere else, we are too thin talent wise in every position, going to take 3 years at this pace, doubles can't get sacked like that for that long. As for CJs comments to Dickenson, mind your own house affairs, looks very amateur, kind of like riders do right now.
