RIDERS/TICATS TRADE *UPDATE WITH CHAMBLIN AUDIO*

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the acquisition of non-import linebacker Shomari Williams, non-import punter Josh Bartel and the eighth overall selection in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft in exchange for the ninth overall selection and the eleventh overall selection.

Williams (6’1 – 232) returns for his second stint with the Green and White after originally being selected by the team in the first round (1stoverall) in the 2010 Canadian Draft. The Toronto native spent three seasons with the Riders before signing with the Tiger-Cats as free agent prior to last season. In 2013 the Queen’s product played just six games, missing the majority of the season due to injury.

For his career, the 28-year-old Williams has registered 89 defensive tackles, 33 special teams tackles, five quarterback sacks and one interception in 60 regular season games.

Bartel (6’3 – 200) will be entering his third CFL season after joining the Tiger-Cats ahead of the 2012 season. The Australian born kicker has appeared in 36 career regular season games punting 229 times for 9,904 yards – a 43.2 yard average.

The 27-year-old was named a 2013 East Division All-Star after punting 112 times for 4897 yards (43.7) including a 69 yard long.

To Saskatchewan:

NI – Shomari Williams
NI – Josh Bartel
1st Round (eighth overall) pick in 2014 CFL Canadian Draft

To Hamilton:

1st Round (ninth overall) pick in 2014 CFL Canadian Draft

BT has done many things that on the surface are head scratchers, but turn out to be good moves. This one however….So Riders are stocking up on Canadian punters for training camp, that makes sense and Canadian kickers are a dime a dozen….so Bartel becomes a toss in to the deal that sees us go and get Williams who is at best a special teams player for a second round pick?? A player that was not a part of the plan last year, but now is??? Really, I don't get that?

That now gives us three players on our Defense with the last name of Williams. Are there any more out there that we can get to training camp?

I guess our punter won't resign? Williams needs to step up drastically from his previous play here..here's hoping Rey Williams stays healthy. .

The best part of the trade is the acquisition of a non-import punter who was an eastern division all-start last year. A very good replacement for Ricky Schmidt, who deserves to be on an NFL team in 2014.

Tsn is reporting we received an eighth round pick not eighth overall, which is it

Williams strengthens the special teams with Neuman leaving. Bartel allows a little more flexibility in the ratio since Scmitt is likely going elsewhere. While it may seem to be a head scratcher, with this move it may allow them some cap room to perhaps extend Durant and sign a couple more pieces

WTF people! We trade up one 1 in the draft and basically get a former 1st overall Canadian LB and a punter for an 11th overall. Memories are short! I think Taman and his crew know what they are doing.
Rick…

Riders picked up a very good punter and good Canadian linebacker and moved up in a draft that isn't very deep. What are people complaining about?

I'd like to wish Ricky Schmidt the best in the NFL he deserves it. So why not replace the best punter last season with the second best from last year. Plus he's Canadian. Good trade fro the riders. added canadian talent and traded up in the draft.

Schmitt was the 2nd best punter in the CFL last year, behind Bartel, who also happens to be a non-import.

Of course I can certainly understand why some of the fans here are outraged, as Taman should certainly poll them before he makes any deals, because they obviously know better what's best for the Roughriders rather than he and his staff.
