RIOT 41 WOLF PACK 7
The Regina Riot are 1-0 to begin the WWCFL season after routing the Winnipeg Nomad Wolf Pack 41-7 Sunday at Mosaic Stadium.
The game got off to a slow start with the first touchdown scored at 14:00 of the first quarter, but once they got their game legs under them the RIOT started to turn it on and followed the first by scoring 2 TD’s in the second quarter as they really stated to establish themselves on the ground. They scored one more TD in the 3rd and finished the game off with two more scores in the fourth.
The initial scoring drive was dominated by great long runs from 3rd year running back Carmen Agar getting 50-60 0f her 143 yards total on one drive alone. Chantel Morrison who also had an outstanding day on the ground, capped off this initial scoring drive with a 2o + yard run.
Quarterback Aimee Kowalski hit veteran receiver Claire Dore on a few nice pass in the second with one culminating in a 20+ yard touchdown for the 4th year quarterback and receiver. Kowalski Had a good day as she was 7/14 for total of 157 yards in mostly first half play, as second quarterback Sami Bray took the field for most of the second half.
The run game was very dominant, as it likely will be for the RIOT in 2014, with a total of 276 yards on the ground.
Kowaslki and Bray combined for 213 yards in the air with one touchdown. The o-line, which is made up this year of a number of returning veterans along with a great crop of rookies, gave their QBs time in the pocket Sunday, and opened up some great holes for their running backs.
The defence came to play as well as they held the Nomad Wolfpack to very few rushing or passing yards, and kept them off the scoreboard till well into the fourth quarter. Veteran Adrienne Zuck took a pick six to the house from 40 yards out in the fourth quarter capping off another outstanding day for the safety and special teams returner.
Second year players Cassitee Criddle and Heidi Bond both came away with interceptions as well. DB Courtney Tafelmeyer #26 was all over the field racking up 5 tackles on the day, and moving to a new position on the D line second year player and Mom of 3 (on this Mother’s Day) Jessee NoName had a QB sack and 2 tackles and was a force out there.
The RIOT will take on the 3 time defending Champion Saskatoon Valkyries next Saturday night in Saskatoon at Griffths Stadium, game time is 7:30 PM it should be a good battle as the Valkyries defeated the Manitoba Fearless 55-0 yesterday in other WWCFL play. 1st place will be on the line in Saskatoon.
