Rivals Saskatoon Huskies and Regina Rams faceoff in critical game

Scott Flory

For the 11th time in history, the Saskatoon Huskies and the Regina Rams will meet as nationally ranked top 10 teams.

On Saturday afternoon, the Huskies will look to go 3-1, while the Rams can go to 2-2 with a win. On Friday’s The Rod Pedersen Show, we had the chance to sit down and talk with Huskies head coach Scott Flory, live in Saskatoon and preview the game.

“They are a good team and it’s going to be a good game,” said Flory. “I’m really looking forward to it”

The Rams have a 7-3 record over the Huskies when both teams are ranked in the top 10 nationally. And while many people are making this weeks game out to be a huge one for both teams, Flory wants to remind his team that it’s only one game out of many.

“Let’s not make Saturday more than it is,” said Flory. “It’s week 4. But we also understand we have only played the inter provincial rivals once in 2019, and now once this year on Saturday.”

With both teams only a few hours from each other, the rivalry is a fierce one, and Flory is sure emotions will be running high on Saturday.

“There’s lots of emotions and feelings and we have guys from Regina, and they have guys from Saskatoon and all that kind of stuff,” said Flory. “That’s just part of the deal, but of course there’s a heightened sense going into it. No one wants to lose this game. We don’t ever want to lose a game at our house.”

Flory said he feels whichever team can set aside that emotion and get down to playing football will be victorious.

“Our rosters are familiar to each other’s staff,” said Flory. “We know what we are going to get. It just comes down to execution. At the end of the day, you have to line up and play. The team that can better line up and play when you take all that emotion and all that stuff away from it, is the team that’s going to be the victor.”

While it is only week four, it is a crucial game for both teams, as there are only two games left for both squads after this week.

The Rams are coming off two consecutive home games, where they defeated the Calgary Dinos 34-21, but lost in overtime last weekend against UBC 31-30. The Huskies however, are coming off two beatdowns after beating UBC 43-15, and winning 54-27 against U of A.

Even after coming off two blowouts, Flory said his team is going to be prepared for anything this weekend.

“We have to respect everybody we play,” said Flory. “I don’t care who it is, they deserve the respect. If we don’t, then we aren’t being true to the game and our teammates.”
