Edmonton has extended the contract of all-star wide receiver Greg Ellingson through the upcoming season.

The 32-year-old from Tampa, Fla., signed with Edmonton in 2019 and had a team-leading 86 receptions for 1,170 yards, and five touchdowns.

Ellingson, who spent his first six CFL seasons in Hamilton and Ottawa, was named a West Division all-star for the first time in his career.

“Greg is always in the conversation as being the best wide receiver in the entire CFL and his production backs that up year after year,” Edmonton general manager Brock Sunderland said Saturday in a statement.

Ellingson remaining in Edmonton gives the club a one-two punch at wideout with all-star Derel Walker.

“We’re excited about the potential of how explosive we can be as an offence with this dynamic duo,” Sunderland said.

“On top of all his attributes on the field, Greg is a great leader and consummate pro with the character we want in our locker room.”

The 2020 CFL season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic and plans for 2021 have yet to be announced.

Ellingson has accumulated 502 receptions, 7,265 receiving yards, and 41 touchdowns in his career.

He was named a CFL all-star in 2017 with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Ellingson has recorded five consecutive seasons of 1,000 receiving yards.

3DownNation reports the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts have swung a blockbuster deal.

The website cites sources as saying the Argos have acquired the rights to receiver Eric Rogers, defensive end Cordarro Law, and defensive back Robertson Daniel from Calgary in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2021 Canadian draft, and a third round pick in the 2021 Global draft.

HAMILTON – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed defensive back and kick returner Frankie Williams, who was named the CFL’s outstanding special teams player in 2019.

Williams, 27, started at defensive back in 16 of 17 appearances for the Ticats in 2019.

He ranked second in the league in pass knockdowns (14) and compiled 50 defensive tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery.

Williams ranked among league leaders in numerous kick-return categories, including first in punt return yardage (949), punt returns of 30 yards or more (10) and average yards per kickoff (24.9).

The Purdue University product was named to the CFL’s all-star team in 2019. Williams has played in 31 career games, including 22 starts at defensive back, over two seasons with Hamilton.

Looks like a one-sided deal for the Argos. Law has 32 sacks in 48 games. Rogers, if healthy, is one of the top receivers in the league. Obviously the Stamps couldn’t sign them so traded for what they could get rather than lose them in free agency. Smart move. With Ellingson Edmonton now has 4 receivers who had over 1,000 yds in 2019 – and a whole pile of other veteran receivers. Something’s gotta give there. With a $33,000 bonus owed Collins on Monday, is he the odd man out? I believe he’s signed through 2022 so who knows. In… Read more »
