The wild card Kansas City Royals have a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Jeremy Guthrie pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, Lorenzo Cain drove in an early run and made a pair of nifty catches, and Kansas City edged the San Francisco Giants 3-2. Cain’s R-B-I groundout three batters in put the Royals ahead, and Kansas City expanded its lead to 3-0 in the sixth when Alex Gordon hit an R-B-I double off Tim Hudson and scored on Eric Hosmer’s single off left-hander Javier Lopez.

A fourth-quarter rally gave the Calgary Stampeders a 40-27 win over the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders. Down 12 points after three quarters, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw a touchdown pass to Jock Sanders. Then Matt Walter scored his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard scamper and defensive back Jamar Wall ran an interception back for a T-D. Rene Paredes added an 18-yard field goal and the Roughriders also conceded a two-point safety in the quarter.

Sean Whyte kicked three field goals and the Montreal Alouettes held on for a 23-17 win over the Ottawa Redblacks. Montreal has won five straight and sits in first in the CFL East after a slow start to the season. Prime Minister Stephen Harper sang “O Canada” with thousands of football fans during a pre-game ceremony to honour two Canadian soldiers killed in domestic attacks over the past week.

Ben Bishop made 40 saves as the Tampa Bay Lightning topped the host Winnipeg Jets 4-2. Jonathan Drouin scored his first-career NHL goal as the Lightning put up three goals in the second period.

Jarome Iginla collected his first two goals for Colorado and had an assist, helping the Avalanche beat the Vancouver Canucks 7-3. Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists and Erik Johnson had a goal and an assist for Colorado.

The Toronto Raptors closed out the NBA pre-season with their sixth-straight win. DeMar DeRozan scored 15 points and Toronto beat the New York Knicks 83-80 in Montreal. Jonas Valanciunas added another 13.
