SCRUFFY’S THIS ‘N THAT

— The Riders are on their bye week, and it has been quiet over at Mosaic Stadium. That is not what some members of a divided fan base were looking for, while others are happy it has been that way.  With no news coming out of the offices, it would appear everything is status quo, and there will be no personnel changes at the top with Corey Chamblin and Brendan Taman continuing on in their positions.

If the axe was going to come down, it would only have been plausible for it to have happened early this week so that the new group would have time to get a plan together with the team being on its bye week. Sorry Chamblin haters, sorry Taman haters, but it would appear as if you are going to have keep grumbling for the rest of the season.

— There are two times a year I wish I could see a CFL neg list. One is now and the other is just before the US College Football bowl season starts. The argument comes up many times about why the CFL makes the neg list so secretive and why fans shouldn’t get a glimpse of it. Why not? If a player is at an NFL training camp and fans think he could be a player on his or her favourite team, would it not make sense to allow us to follow his progress and then hope he winds his way north of the border?

When Keith Price was finishing his career with the University of Washington, a CFL front office person emailed me a neg list with the agreement I would not go out and start publicizing who was on what team’s list. Seeing Price was on there, I reached out to Brendan Taman and asked if I could put on this blog that Price was on the list and you could catch him play at the Alamo Bowl against Robert Griffin III and Baylor.

What a game it was as Price threw for 438 yards and four touchdowns (one to current Seahawks receiver Jermaine Kearse) while running for three others as the Huskies lost to Baylor 67-56 in what was a Madden-style game. There was a lot of interest in Price from that day forward in Riderville. It had people talking the CFL in January and isn’t that what the league wants?

If there are players out there that the respective fan bases can keep their eye on, I say we let them have a chance.  The list changes from week to week so why not just allow us to see a list at the start of the season and the end of the season. Who’s kidding who, the chances of the CFL doing something like this are probably right up there with the chance of some programs being instituted to improve the work of the officiating.

— Another week of CFL play started Thursday night with Edmonton beating Montreal.  Going into the week, there were 5 teams at 4-2. Who is the best team in that bunch? I’ll still go with Hamilton.  After years of being dominant, have the Eastern Division teams finally turned the table. There is actually talk we could see a crossover this year with an Eastern team coming West. Who would have imagined that years ago

— Drew Willy is out for 6-8 weeks, but perhaps the year with a knee injury. We will now find out who has a better football team–the Riders or the Bombers. This just in, my vote goes to the guys who wear green. I think there are many across the league who might feel the same way.

— UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor says he would dismantle Floyd “Money” Mayweather.  I think there are many out there who would love to see McGregor have the chance. Ronda Rousey also said she could kick Mayweather’s butt in a no-rules fight. That would be awesome, but there is no way the Mayweather camp will ever allow that to happen.

— I can only imagine what it would be like for sports radio not only in this province, but around the country if an incident like what happened at New York Jets camp this week happened in Riderville.

— Blue Jays fans are upset because former major league pitcher now ESPN analyst Dallas Braden referred to them as a beer-league softball team. Doesn’t a beer-league softball team just hit homer after homer after homer and score a lot of runs?

— The Yankees have collapsed! I thought Toronto would win the East if they could give New York a good beatdown in the 13 head to head games the two had against one another, but unless there is a Toronto collapse, I don’t see them giving up first place in the division now. I still say this team will win or lose depending on how David Price does on the mound because while the pitching staff has improved their numbers since the all-star break, that staff doesn’t scare me (Price excluded) if I am the opposition.

As much as this country has gone Jays crazy, this blogger is more interested in watching the equally hot Chicago Cubs try to nail down a playoff spot. I don’t dislike the Jays, but lets just say if for some reason the Cubs and Jays were to meet in the World Series this year, my loyalties would be firmly behind the Cubs. Its been over 100 years while some Toronto baseball fans actually remember a World Series title.  One other note concerning the Jays, it makes me laugh when people say they don’t like the Jays because of their affiliation to Rogers and what they do to the CFL. If that is your reason for hating the Jays, your hate is misguided, but so be it.

— On Tuesday night, the home teams went 15-0 in MLB action. That is the first time that has ever happened in the history of major league baseball.  The odds in that are 1 in almost 33-thousand which is still a better bet than the Cleveland Browns winning the Super Bowl!

— I will give the city of Regina credit as they keep doing what they can to improve the parking situation downtown, but they have a longgggggg way to go. I know many people who won’t go downtown during the day because of parking and if I didn’t work downtown,; my trips would be few and far between.  There are many who work downtown who abuse the system, but the system is heavily flawed as it stands now.  It isn’t going to get any better as the city grows either. In this blogger’s mind, the strategy right now must be scrapped with a new one being developed.

— I don’t know a lot about Lane Zablocki, but he has an impressive resume.  I guess his career in a Pats uniform will ultimately decide the Morgan Klimchuk trade, but right now it looks to be advantage Brandon. Jesse Gabrielle came here with a reputation and now that reputation leaves to Prince George. The Pats are putting a positive spin on the deal as you would expect, but it leaves the trade for Klimchuk a little hollow and once again gives Kelly McCrimmon the advantage.

— Things didn’t start well for the Regina Red Sox in the WMBL final against Lethbridge as they were soundly thrashed 19-3.  I guess its because a lot of these players have to get back to their US college teams, but I don’t think its fair that the winner of the Weyburn-Regina series had to board the bus immediately for Lethbridge. Could the league not have started the series Friday night giving the Saskatchewan division winner at least one day of rest?

— Dustin Johnson has the lead after one round of the PGA Championship. One can’t help but pull for Johnson, who might as well be considered part Canadian seeing he is married to Paulina Gretzky, but with all the bad things that have happened to him at majors throughout the year, you just wait and wonder for the collapse.

That’s all I got. Have a great weekend everyone!  Stay cool!

Very good point on the Red Sox! It made no sense for a team to be in hurry-up mode after winning one game and having to get on the iron lung to make a substantial trip. The end result last night likely showed that.

Scruffy,

I'm curious of your (and other misguided in my opinion) comment that Brandon wins the Klimchuk trade.

What did Klimchuk do for Brandon, other than get them a regular season accomplishment?

He's long gone for pro now – and the Pats used the ice time that he vacated to develop more young players and the (current) net result is a highly-touted (in the opinion of Pats scouting & hockey staff) prospect, an additional '98 forward with the capability of playing with Sam Steel for multiple years.

Just food for thought.

"Flag fest" in the CFL game last night. Man, way too many flags! The phantom and marginal calls are hurting the game. I'm not sure this is what the League envisioned when they introduced the new rules this year. How many drives were sustained last night due to a flag, many of which were marginal or phantom? CFL should be concerned as the game is being adversely affected and fans are becoming more frustrated, which will lead to less interest in the games.

As long as the Riders keep collecting 20+ penalties per game, they won't be better than anyone.

The WMBL season has to be finished as soon as possible as players need to return to colleges early next week. Even a casual WMBL fan knows that Mitch. No way they can start a series on Friday night. More incentive to win quickly I suppose. Considering you're supposed to be CKRM's Baseball guy, you just came across as massively uninformed.

What happened at Jet's camp? Mitch, not everyone spends the day loafing around watching ESPN. Please give us a few more details instead of mailing in your Friday column.

Hi Rider fans Hiding the neg list feels like so 1960ish. Although this wouldn't always be true, if a team is crap, and you could look at it's neg list from the previous year, or from two years ago, it was probably crap too. The Rider fans would have been all over Taman 2 years ago if we could have compared the Rider neg list to everyone else's and it was crap. The quality of the neg list tells you how smart your personnel people are and how hard they're working. The arm chair GMs and cerebral fans would have… Read more »

"With no news coming out of the offices, it would appear everything is status quo, and there will be no personnel changes at the top with Corey Chamblin and Brendan Taman continuing on in their positions." Yeh, it looks like Reynolds and the BOD have decided to play ostrich and stick their heads in the sand. That's not a bad thing if they have replacements in mind that aren't available right now. But, if they're thinking the dynamic duo are going to get this straightened out, it ain't going to happen. Think about it. The portion of the team that… Read more »

Hey Scruffy, I couldn't agree on you more on the Jays hate because of Rogers ownership. WAAH WAAH WAAH I say. These idiots who say that probably get their Centre Ice package from Access or SK Tel Max and watch their NHL games or they support sponsors who advertise on CITY TV which is Rogers based or something else. I'm an Orioles fan so I am hoping Baltimore can give Toronto a run for their money before all is said and done, but it is nice seeing Toronto relevant again. On another baseball matter, the Red Sox are getting the… Read more »

Re: Klimchuk trade This is a win-win for both Brandon and Regina Scruffy. Did McCrimmon fleece the Pats by giving them a troublesome player like Gabrielle? Yes they did! Regina could have gotten so much more for Morgan, like a younger player, a prospect or a solid pick in the bantam draft but they didn't because that is the way Kelly operates. Kelly also got what he wanted, sort of. He got a player to put them over the top in the East and get to the final. It cost him nothing in return. It is why Kelly is respected… Read more »

Very interesting story in the LP today about the Red Sox, the WMBL and Baseball Canada. It is very unprofessional of Baseball Canada to not work with the Red Sox on this matter. It is also unprofessional for the city to not step in and act as a mediator. The Red Sox suggested a late start Saturday and no one would budge an inch? That is a very poor attitude if you ask me and any thoughts of now attending this event which is how I was going to spend my EDO will be spent elsewhere. There is a suggestion… Read more »

Pats could have gotten so much more for Klimchuk.

McCrimmon knew he could deal Gabrielle away because he was a headache and to give him up for a prized possession like Klimchuk would have him smiling like a butchers dog.

Paddock saw what type of headache Gabrielle was and got rid of him despite his "glowing" endorsement.

This kid will be playing senior hockey in Moosomin within 5 years. Count on it!

That being said, I hear good things about Zablocki so maybe, just maybe Paddock turned a wrong into a right here. Let's see!

Hey Mitch,

Did you see the interview with Jim Popp yesterday regarding the neglist? He says there is so much tampering in regards to players on other teams neglists, he wants the league to do away with it. He also states the league is in favour, so there must be some owners/BOD's not in agreement.

I totally agree the lists should be available to the public.

Kilmchuck may well play for Brandon this year. If he was still in a Pat he would without a doubt be playing in the AHL this year, but it sounds like he may be sent to Brandon to play this year. If he plays for the wheat Kings this year it was a huge win in the trade

From Kel from the Left Coast, The Eskimos are using there 3rd string QB on special teams for… get this… running down field to make tackles, and he is apparently quite good at it (at least he is contributing in some way). Here is my point, we have Keith Price on the roster right now, and although I don't advocate for any QB to be making tackles on special teams, I do support getting them involved in some way. Scruffy mentioned the game whereby Price threw for 4 TD's including over 400 yards; he also ran for 3 rushing TD's… Read more »

That Esks/Als game was not the world's most exciting contest ever but I did see some interesting things. Earlier this year (Maybe training camp) Montreal's man hunting middle linebacker Bear Woods was injured so Jim Popp just went out and got a Middle LB who is making an impact. Umpteen time all-star DE John Bowman was leading the team in sacks but they rested him because he's getting long in the tooth and Popp has found Bowman's heir apparent. Taman looked for years for a Rey Williams replacement and never did replace John Chick when he was living his NFL… Read more »

If Klimchuk plays for Brandon this year, we might as well have Brandon and Red Deer play a best of 99 for the East Division title.

Agree with Kel on the Price comments. This kid has CFL written all over him. Sims might be a player too, yet they stick with Sunseri. While I am not the Taman hater many on this blog are, the decision to bring him back was a terrible one by Brendon.

Spieth had a great 2nd round at PGA. He will win!

Well Kel, the way things are going this year there is more than a chance that Brett Smith (who is looking better each time out) will get injured at some point. By then Price will have learned the offense and be thrown into action.

Re: Parking downtown

I haven't been to downtown Regina for three years. Parking is the reason why. Those who work downtown and don't want to pay incessant fees at an Impark hog the stalls. The parking increase did nothing to stop these people from what my brother says.

The city could get some much added revenue if they would buy back some Impark lots and offer them at a much cheaper alternative.

Sorry Mr. Fougere, everything I need I can find in other areas of the city. I don't need to go downtown for anything even at night.
