SMITH ON VERGE OF RIDER DEAL?

Rider prospect Ryan Smith of NDSU

FARGO – Former North Dakota State receiver Ryan Smith no longer has any eligibility and may be on the verge of signing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

But the role Smith played will keep on giving as long as the Bison continue to run the West Coast offense.

He created the footprint that NDSU will try to replicate for years.

“He laid the foundation,” said freshman receiver Tyler Wrice. “He showed that you can be a smaller receiver, but you have to play hard and put down effort on every single play.”

The foundation is commonly called “slot receiver” and Smith worked that to perfection at times over the course of his last three years at NDSU. Wrice is hoping to be that guy.

Smith was 5-foot-7 and 175 pounds his senior year. Wrice is 5-7, 170 pounds.

“Just look at the way he used his quickness to his advantage,” Wrice said. “We’re both smaller players, so he showed that you have to think ahead and go into a game with a plan to figure out what the defensive player is going to do before he makes his moves.”

His father, Trampis Wrice, played cornerback at the University of Nebraska and his cousin, Antwon Blake, is a cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tyler Wrice is hoping to add the slot receiver distinction to the football family tree.

“To be more like a playmaker and to make explosive plays,” he said, “because obviously I’m not going to be on the field all the time because there are bigger receivers. We can come in on certain packages and make a big play happen.”

It’s the blueprint that Ryan Smith worked to perfection.

There is nothing wrong with being compared to a legend.

I think Mr. Wrice needs to check his history. Smith didn't lay the foundation….Dressler did.

Cap – you need to check your facts! Dressler didn't go to NDSU he went to UND.

Another 'smrt' Rider fan.

Why does he have to be compared to anyone? Why cant he just be Ryan Smith?

I am average size, married with kids and nobody compares me to Brad Pitt.

Curious about the book he is holding in the picture. That is the infamous Rollie Greeno from Jamestown College (Curty Wurty played for him).

Before the comparisons start lets remember that Dressler didn't make the team as a receiver he started out as a returner and worked his way into the receiving spot.

Funny I dont even remember Dressler returning any punts or kick offs until later in his CFL career. I understand that he did yet I dont remember. When I do remember Dressler was his first catch across the middle in 2008 in Toronto I believe. Then he put on the burners and went the distance. Putting the Riders ahead in the game. After that game I believe Dressler rarely returned until late 2010. None in 2011 and agian late in 2012 and 2013

Hopefully Smith knows how to ignore idiot, know it all, band wagon jumping fans who constantly criticize and compare every player or coach that walks into our locker room. I'm only 27 but am a life long fan and I gotta say that I'm sick of the fans that constantly give their loud mouth opinions about the team and the way it should be run, etc etc. These people think they know everything about football, the riders, and every body that's within the organization. Constantly making comparisons and theories about everything. They're usually the same people that never buy tickets… Read more »
