STACKHOUSE’S 10 THOUGHTS

IMG_5666

1 – JETS THREAT – I could write, possibly all 10 Thoughts this week, on the horrible marketing tactic the Winnipeg Jets deployed this week in an effort to boost season ticket sales.  The Jets are about 3000 tickets (per game) short of pre-pandemic levels.  In fact, Jets games used to be sold out each and every night and there was even a waiting list.  Now, tickets can be had via third parties for a fraction of the cost the Jets are selling them for.  I’ll get into the reasons further below but threatening your fan base has long been proven to be a failing tactic as far as generating more revenue and it, often, results in further losses.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it one more time:  the Jets are actually operating as though they WANT to leave Winnipeg.  If you wanted to orchestrate a departure from a city, they are establishing a perfect blueprint for it.

2 – REASONS FOR DECLINING ATTENDANCE – The hockey reasons for Jets fans cooling on the product are very easy to identify.  First of all, you have a team that has done absolutely nothing to capitalize on the prime years of their stars.  Three seasons ago, many around the NHL were predicting, at least, one Stanley Cup for a club that featured Connor Hellebuyck, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Nik Ehlers, Kyle Connor, Patrik Laine, Josh Morrissey, Dustin Byfuglien, and Jacob Trouba as its core.  Here we are five years later and Byfuglien has quit, Trouba forced his way out, Scheifele has developed a bad reputation as far as dressing room character is concerned, Wheeler is old, Ehlers has been injured and underperformed, Laine was chased away and replaced by an overrated centre who also now wants to leave, and the General Manager has added nobody of note to replace them.  The Jets longtime coach bailed saying he was out of ideas on how to get maximum potential from the group.  The GM, himself, has been the subject of questionable ethics surrounding the Kyle Beach situation and the ownership stood behind him.  The old, tired argument is that players don’t want to come to Winnipeg.  Baloney.  Players will go wherever they can win.  Connor McDavid can get max money from any team in the league and he chose Edmonton.  However, if you have an organization indifferent to winning, playing in a market where they tax you at 50% and the weather is freezing cold…of course nobody wants to go there.  Change the culture, the players will come.

3 – MORE REASONS – Now for the off-ice reasons fans aren’t going and some of you will disagree and that’s fine.  The Jets are in the same boat as the Roughriders as far as how much their attendance is suffering and I bring it all back to the alienation of their fans through rigid health measures that, yes were forced by governments, but they were cheered by both organizations and both teams bragged about how unvaccinated people weren’t welcome at the games anyway and could easily be replaced by folks who felt more safe.  That was a ridiculous thing to say on day one and both teams are paying the price for it today without even the slightest acknowledgement of it.  A simple apology, in my mind, would go a long way to getting some of these people back.  In the case of the Jets, they asked their workers to go out of their way to harass fans who were a bit lax on wearing masks during games.  As we know, you could have a drink or something to eat and you are able to remove your mask.  I heard stories of attendants glaring at fans and screaming at people to get their masks back on in between sips or bites.  I’m sorry, but if I’m going to pay that kind of money to watch an NHL game, I do not need to be barked at.  Heck, if I’m vaccinated, why am I also wearing a mask?  Treat me like you appreciate me.  I, for one, went to about 6 Jets games a year prior to the pandemic.  That’s a five hour drive commitment each way.  I’ve been to none ever since the arena was reopened to fans because, for that price, I expect to be appreciated, not harassed.  I also expected these sports teams and the government to show confidence in the vaccine by removing all restrictions if everyone in attendance is vaccinated.  Sports teams really should have advocated hard on this one but they, in some cases, exceeded government restrictions.  Bad idea.  The other calculated risk the Jets took that they didn’t bank on, was that by not advocating for fans to attend their games, a lot of people realized that not having a game to go to isn’t so bad.  There are other things to do that cost less, especially in a time where costs everywhere for everything are on the rise.

4 – ONE OTHER THING ON JETS – Here’s the other thing that would be hilarious if it wasn’t so insulting.  The Jets have increased ticket prices every single year despite an on-ice product that has deteriorated every single year for the last five seasons.  I’ve often said to other fans who love rebuilds, “Why would you attend games when your team is junk on purpose?  As they chop their payroll, are they chopping your ticket prices?”  We all know the answer to that.  So, here we have a team that is less entertaining, less competitive, less appreciative of their fans, tone deaf on an economy that is devastating people and business as far as disposable income is concerned and they issue a threat to leave town.  You know what?  Go.  Don’t let the door hit you on the way out and if you can make more money in Houston, Kansas City, or Salt Lake City…more power to you.  See ya.

5 – JETS CAN UPSET – I realize I just spent quite a bit of space criticizing the Jets, but their first round playoff matchup couldn’t be a better suited pairing.  They can pull off the upset here as they have the better starting goalie and I think they actually have more talent top to bottom than the Vegas Golden Knights, it’s just a matter of maximizing it.  I also think this is finally the year Toronto gets out of round one.  It may not be close.  I know a lot of people are pointing to Andrei Vasilevskiy being the difference maker but he’s just 11-10-3, 2.87, .911 since February 1.  Contrast that to Ilya Samsonov, who’s 10-5-3, 2.35, .921 over the same time period and I think the advantage between the pipes isn’t what most think.

6 – RECENT STATS – I’ve always given more weight to stats in hockey over the final two months because I think it’s a better reflection of how players and teams are playing as the playoffs begin.  There’s no stat more important than wins, so here are your leaders since February 1:  Alexander Georgiev (20), Stuart Skinner (16), Igor Shesterkin (16), Jake Oettinger (16), Linus Ullmark (15), Ilya Sorokin (15).  The top scorer over the last two months has not been Connor McDavid.  It’s actually Nathan MacKinnon (32-23-38-61).  As great a season as the Boston Bruins have had, if you picked the Colorado Avalanche to repeat as Cup champs, I wouldn’t argue with you.  If you are looking at an ‘under the radar’ team, how about Minnesota?  Filip Gustavsson is 11-2-6, 1.95, .938 since February 1.

7 – SMALL MARKET FRAUDS – Most people don’t subscribe to this thinking, but I no longer buy into the notion that there are small market teams that can’t afford superstars.  Guess what?  All of them played for over a year to either empty buildings or greatly diminished capacity and none of the pro teams in North America went under.  The Phoenix Coyotes are committed to playing in a 4500 seat arena for the foreseeable future and don’t seem to be in any danger of shutting their doors.  Therefore, fans are a luxury and not a necessity.  Whether you are the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Los Angeles Dodgers doesn’t matter.  Both can afford Shohei Ohtani if they truly wanted him but one of them has a built-in excuse to not even try and most of their fans accept it, even though it is a bunch of BS.

8 – RUSH STUNNED – The Halifax Thunderbirds ended the playoff hopes of the Saskatchewan Rush on Saturday night in typical Rush fashion as they defeated the hapless Rush 15-11.  Goaltender Alex Buque left the game seven minutes in due to a lower body injury and was replaced by Eric Penney, who was sensational for 38 minutes before collapsing over the final 15 in which the Thunderbirds scored nine times in erasing a 10-7 deficit.  By contrast, the Rush had just nine shots in the fourth quarter.  Halifax’s Jake Withers won 30 of 31 face-offs (I have never seen a face-off stat that lopsided) as the Rush lost for the seventh time in eight games.  A season that started 4-and-2 (with both losses coming by one goal) is going to end on a stunning and shocking note.

9 – RATTLERS ON DECK – The Rush have two games left, but I’ll be turning my attention to the CEBL’s Saskatchewan Rattlers as they open the new season on May 31st against the Vancouver Bandits.  Officially, they’ve signed three players for the upcoming season.   One of which is Malik Benlevi, one of the dominant five starters they employed last season.  Another is Mike Nuga, who made an impact upon arrival late in the year, and the third player is D’Andre Bernard, a strong bench player who will be entering his third season with the Rattlers.  The Rattlers were 11-and-9 a season ago and played very entertaining basketball after struggling mightily in 2020 and 2021.  Their ticket prices are on the rise but the CEBL remains the best bang for your sports entertainment buck in the country.

10 – RED SOX MORALS OVER COMPETITIVENESS – Last week, I talked about sports teams living in a time where it’s never been easier for them to win if they put their minds to it.  Many organizations are focused on non-competitive things such as diversity and equity as well as very selective morality.  The Boston Red Sox are an unmitigated disaster being a large market Major League Baseball team operating as a small market one.  A couple of years ago they acquired Alex Verdugo in a trade with the Dodgers for Mookie Betts despite a very checkered past (you can Google his indiscretions).  You also have, perhaps, their most storied player ever – David Ortiz, known to run in somewhat shady social groups.  However, the team has drawn the line when it comes to signing Trevor Bauer, who was cleared of wrongdoing after a witch-hunt from a jaded lover.  In fact, Bauer has been, effectively, black balled from MLB and is playing in Japan.  You can be appalled at his sexual appetite, but he hasn’t been proven to have done anything wrong and there are plenty of players who have done worse, I assure you, on every single roster.  So, any MLB team that finds themselves dealing with a pitcher shortage this season that prevents them from winning deserves no sympathy.  Any one of them could have signed Bauer for league minimum money and, probably, gotten a Cy Young calibre season in return.

Ya know Mike. Well I guess start with I respect your opinion and the time you put into this. I went to winnipeg for a vacation and to catch a Jets game. I also caught a Moose game. Coming away from it. There should be line up around the block to either play there or work there. That is a great town. There are 32 teams and they hand out 1 trophy. Do you have any clue the empty seats in Washington and st Louis along with many other cities? The Jets CEO simply said let’s remember what happened and… Read more »

I DO know the empty seats in other places. That’s why I say if you think you can make more somewhere else …see ya later. We can agree to disagree on a fake pandemic. You have your views. I have mine. This was nowhere near WW2 but if that’s your comparison so be it. You got fooled and too proud to admit it. No problem on my end. Yeah just get over it. I have. So should the Jets. Appreciate the people that go and treat them better rather than bitch about the couple thousand who don’t. If the Jets… Read more »

If your the Jets realistically what could have been done to improve the team this year and going forward. Keep in mind these hard truths very slim amount of NHL a players are willing to waive a no trade clause to play in Winnipeg, free agents you will need to significantly overpay in years and money and that’s to get tier 2 free agents. And your not going to throw around draft picks to have rentals. Draft picks to this team are significantly more important building blocks then most NHL franchises. Mcdavid never choose the oilers, they won a lottery… Read more »

McDavid could have done the same thing Trouba did but he didn’t. He stayed. There are moves to be made if you try hard enough. It hasn’t worked out for Calgary, but they figured out a way to get top talent for Tkachuk and they signed Kadri. Does Chychrun have a no trade? Ottawa didn’t have to pay much for him. There are a lot of players who want out of Vancouver right now too but that’s a nice city.

Mcdavid stayed cause he got a good (albeit fair) contract that will still allow him to hit UFA at a prime age. The Oilers got lucky they landed mcdavid or they might still be picking top 10 every year. What moves is there to be made for the jets. I felt they did ok at the trade deadline, they are still in the playoffs so why complain? Patrick Kane or that level of players are not waving NTC to come to Winnipeg. Wining in pro sports is not as easy as you seem to think or have the hindsight knowledge… Read more »

Winnipeg would be in a much better position today if they paid the same price for Chychrun. They also should have gotten someone to replace Perfetti. And, if Scheifele is a dressing room problem, they could move him too before it’s too late. The return on Timo Meier was a bunch of nothing. Lots of players have moved for ‘assets’ or ‘costs’ that really aren’t an issue for Winnipeg or shouldn’t be. They’ve also got Heinola stuck in the minors. Either use him or move him. He’s of no value in the AHL. There is A LOT this team can… Read more »

I try pretty hard not to be bitter or hold grudges, but I haven’t forgotten these things yet: a (slim) majority of Jets fans voted to keep out the unvaccinated when even the province lifted the restrictions. This was probably a year after anyone with even the tiniest bit of curiosity knew that the vaccines did nothing to stop the spread. Jets fans were either ignorant or vindictive. Having lived here the last 3 years, I believe it to be a combination. Apparently season ticket holders also voted overwhelmingly against the Jets playing some of their games in front of… Read more »

I will give you a big AMEN and how you articulated your post is EXACTLY what I am saying in my 10 Thoughts. I believe there are A LOT of people just like you but the majority of them don’t write about it (like me) or talk about it (like you just did). They simply close their wallets, zip their mouths, and move on with life. Organizations like the Jets made their bed. Now it’s time to sleep in it.

I grew up in Regina and moved to Winnipeg ; this is a hockey town!! Winnipeg gets such a bad rap but there is so much history and culture, it really is Toronto at fraction of the price. Drive up Main Street from portage avenue and you will quickly be humbled at what you have in life and the opportunities you’ve been given. Heartbeat of Western Canada

Regina needs a ” forks ” type gathering spot around Wascana Park, IMO

Winnipeg has about 2 bad streets (Selkirk Ave being one) and the rest of the city is awesome.

To be honest would love to see the Jets move and City folk focus more on Arts Culture, and the other 10 types of sports they have here. True North put a lot of money into the Square so don’t see them giving up just yet. Lower the beer by 40 percent and you probably sell 3 times as many. Owners of the pats need to tour the Goldeyes ball park and build that in the warehouse district ; home plate facing into downtown. 2/3 the size of Winnipeg. Make it so you can tarp over half stands and outfield… Read more »

I am a lifelong fan of the Maple Leafs. I’ll be easy to recognize over the coming weeks as I turn blue while holding my breath during the first round of the playoffs. LOL! While I follow the Jets – living in Winnipeg it’s hard not to – I am open minded and realistic about the team and management. I am a big supporter of GM Kevin Chevaldayoff. I have never met a nicer guy and very few smarter. That said, here’s my take on your comments. Wheeler got old faster than expected and Ehlers became injury prone – that’s… Read more »

Kevin Cheveldayoff smart? NOT! Just because you met him once or twice doesn’t make him the nicest guy around. Kevin Cheveldayoff has got go! No ands ifs or but about it. This guy has been in the employ of the NHL Winnipeg Jets since 2011, previous with Chicago. The Jets are nowhere near a Stanley Cup Championship under his tenure as the team gm and will never be until he is gone. End of subject!

No where near? They’ve been a top end team for a few years now. It’s hard to be good 82 games a year and there are a lot of variables to it. They made the playoffs and Calgary is teeing off. I agree that draft picks are important and building talent. Bowness is a great coach and he cares about his players. Too many part time fans with little hockey knowledge around. Couldn’t even run & coach a 12 year old soccer team

Another thing the vaccine is good for is suppressing your immune system. From my experience at my work which mandated the vaxx for a 6 month period is a lot of people have got Covid multiple times in the past year. Myself and my other coworkers who lost their job for 6 months because we didn’t take it have got it once and that’s it (we also miraculously survived it without a hospital stay). Also, the amount of sick days my vaxxed coworkers have taken over the past year has skyrocketed. Any little thing and they are sick now, explain… Read more »

Okay, Well since 2007 Rod has allowed me to entertain and in pro-wrestling terminology play a character that can generate “heat”. Roddy Piper if you will and I’m grateful to play the foil and entertain. Mike Stackhouse can now be declared a very dangerous individual. It’s one thing to discuss/debate policies – that’s fine. We can have rational discussions. Did the Federal/Provincial governments overreach? Sure, maybe. Were some of the blanket support policies inconsistent? Sure, maybe. When we get into denying the sky is blue, Elvis isn’t dead, We never walked on the moon, and the list goes on then… Read more »

There was the “Want these seats? Get vaccinated” ad campaign. It makes sense you don’t remember that stuff – it didn’t matter to you if you were already vaccinated.

And your comments on the vaccine illustrate exactly why the Jets (or government) haven’t bothered to apologize or admit any fault. The majority of Winnipeggers still believe and are parroting covid vaccine talking points that were proven false well over a year ago.

Wow, I previously thought your articles were a touch of “glass half empty… whoa is me, blah blah blah all is bad…” But now, after this commentary. Fake pandemic? Seriously? What is wrong with you. Further, why does Rod Pederson continue to allow you to write articles on this BS. Time to be done Mike.

Sorry to upset you….the Jets fired me up with their thinly veiled threat last week.

As far as fake pandemic is concerned…the column isn’t meant to rehash everything but there are a lot of you out there that just want to forget the last two-three years ever happened and you just can’t walk away from that. When sports teams complain about their attendance, they have to remember they were the ones that chased their customers away and now they wonder where those same customers went. It’s laughable if it wasn’t so sad.

I used to troll and state – “Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party want to take everything from you etc etc etc” – and everyone and I mean everyone was in on the joke under the handle “Obama” – nobody took that serious and it was basically being a troll. This guy……this guy could get someone killed. Manitoba Premier with tears in his eyes “apologized” for being the adult in the room that had to cancel Christmas. His immortal words – “if you don’t think Covid is real; you’re an idiot.” Again we can debate policy, overreach, hindsight. This moron… Read more »

I really enjoy Mike’s articles. He speaks the truth and mixes in his opinions and thoughts. If you don’t enjoy reading them, that’s ok you aren’t forced into it. Or would you prefer if the govt said you must read his articles or you can’t keep your job or go into a restaurant?

Re: the Jets One longtime observer put it this way: “they’ve treated their fans like ATMs, then when they burn through all the goodwill, the answer is a guilt trip.” I like the Jets and I enjoy going to half a dozen or so games each season. But I’m not going to delay my retirement or cancel vacations so I can afford season tickets to keep Chipman and Thomson (AKA the richest person in Canada) happy. I would be sad to see the Jets go, but I’ve lived through it before. There is more than enough sports in this town… Read more »

I bet the security payroll for the jets and other game day staff is triple any other team. Too many zoo animals downtown Winnipeg. its a $250 dollar night anyway you slice it. $11 bucks for a small can of bud heavy or horse piss light?? Winnipeg also gets too many Sunday night and Monday – Wednesday games. Winnipeg is a party town, and the rink is top of the league in terms of passion and loudness. How about Saskatoon can’t even sell 7,000 tickets in the second round of the playoffs and you want a new 15,000 seat arena??… Read more »
