The Calgary Stampeders captains for the 2014 season are linebacker Juwan Simpson, running back Jon Cornish, running back Rob Cote and kicker Rene Paredes. The four were tabbed to serve the captaincy roles as the result of a player vote.

• Simpson is in his seventh season with the club. He is a three-time West Division all-star and was the finalist for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award in 2010. The 29-year-old Decatur, Ala., native was a member of the Stamps’ 2008 Grey Cup-championship squad and has played 92 career regular-season and post-season games for the Red and White.

• Cornish is in his eighth season with Calgary and is the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player award winner. He has also won the Most Outstanding Canadian trophy and the CFL rushing title in each of the past two seasons. The 29-year-old New Westminster, B.C., product has 133 games of experience with the Stamps.

• Like Cornish, Cote joined the Stampeders in 2007 and he has more than 100 games of experience with the Red and White. The 27-year-old Cochrane native was the 2013 recipient of the Presidents’ Ring award, as voted by his teammates, for demonstrating excellence on and off the field and also was presented with the Herm Harrison Memorial Award for his service to the community.

• Paredes won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award in 2013 after setting CFL records for best single-season accuracy rate for field goals and most consecutive field goals made. The 28-year-old Montreal-area product is entering his fourth season with the Stampeders.

The Stampeders will kick off the 2014 regular season on Saturday, June 28 when they face the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
