Jon Lester is going to the Cubs. The left-handed pitcher has agreed to a six-year, $155-million contract with Chicago. Lester is a three-time all-star and won two World Series with the Boston Red Sox. The deal has an option for 2021, and if guaranteed, could make the deal worth $170 million over seven years.

Edmonton wasn’t able to complete the home-and-home sweep against San Jose. The Oilers fell 5-2 to the Sharks, one game after ending an 11-game losing skid. Joe Pavelski led San Jose’s offence with two goals. Jordan Eberle and David Perron found the back of the net for the Oilers. Ben Scrivens turned aside 19 shots in the loss.

Youth was the difference for the Jets as they beat Dallas 5-2. Rookie Adam Lowry struck twice while Mathieu Perreault, Blake Wheeler and Michael Frolik also scored. Tyler Seguin scored his NHL leading 22nd goal for the Stars with Antoine Roussel also chipping in. Rookie goalie Michael Hutchinson picked up the win by kicking out 26 shots.

Montreal honoured the late Jean Beliveau prior to its 3-1 win over Vancouver. Before the game, a 15-minute ceremony took place with a video tribute, moment of silence, and lengthy standing ovation. Beliveau’s funeral takes place this afternoon. In Toronto, it was the Maple Leafs beating Calgary 4-1. James van Riemsdyk scored the game-winner in the second period.

In the NBA, LeBron James was too much for the Raptors. He had 35 points and a late three-pointer to help Cleveland rally and beat Toronto 105-101. Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas each scored 18 for the Raptors. Kyle Lowry added 16, but was held to only two points in the fourth quarter.

Elsewhere, Utah slipped by the defending NBA champion Spurs 100-96, the Lakers defeated Sacramento 98-95, Miami beat Phoenix 103-97 and Memphis downed Dallas 114-105.
