Connor McDavid left Edmonton’s season finale with what appeared to be a serious left leg injury as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 3-1. The Oilers star was hurt early in the second period. Darting down the wing, McDavid had his feet knocked out from under him as he tried to cut hard around defenceman Mark Giordano. The Oilers captain slid hard into the goal post, his left leg taking the full brunt of the impact.

Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 to earn home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Winnipeg won just two of its last seven games to give up a four-point lead in the Central Division. Nashville won earlier tonight to take its second straight division title.

Rookie Ryan Poehling had a hat trick and scored again in the shootout in his NHL debut as the Montreal Canadiens topped the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals and Columbus beat the Ottawa Senators 6-2. And St. Louis earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks.

In the WHL conference semifinals, Edmonton downed Calgary 3-2 in OT in Game 1 of their eastern affair. Prince Albert hosts Saskatoon on Sunday with a 1-0 series lead. Out west, Vancouver beat Victoria 2-1 to grab a 2-0 series lead while Spokane opened with a 6-3 victory at Everett.

In the lone remaining SJHL conference semifinal, Estevan hosts Melfort on Sunday evening and will try to avoid elimination. The Mustangs lead the Best-of-7 by a 3-2 edge. The Battlefords North Stars are waiting in the Canalta Cup Final.

Canada’s Kevin Koe won twice on Saturday to earn a berth in the gold-medal game at the world men’s curling championship in Lethbridge, Alberta. With just five seconds left on the clock in the 10th end of a morning qualification game, Koe delivered a perfect tap to beat Scotland’s Bruce Mouat 6-5. Koe didn’t let up in a 6-5 semifinal extra-end win over Switzerland’s Peter De Cruz this evening.

Carlos Carrasco became the first Indians pitcher since at least 1908 to strike out 12 over five innings and Cleveland beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2. Carrasco was overpowering a week after struggling in his first start of the season.

Bret `The Hitman” Hart is OK after the famous pro wrestler from Calgary was tackled by a spectator while he was giving a speech during the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in Brooklyn, New York. The man was promptly subdued by several people who came to Hart’s defence.
