The Chicago Cubs got offence from an unlikely source Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series. Travis Wood became the first relief pitcher since 1924 to hit a post-season home run, helping the Cubs beat San Francisco 5-2. Wood took over when starter Kyle Hendricks got hurt in the fourth inning when a comebacker struck him in the forearm.

The Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers have been rained out. That means Game 2 of that National League Division Series has been pushed back to (Sunday) at Nationals Park, weather permitting. Rich Hill had been scheduled to start for Los Angeles against Tanner Roark. The Dodgers won the opener Friday night 4-3.

Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano is dealing with a concussion after being hit in the back of the head by a line drive in yesterday’s Game 2 of the AL Division Series with Texas. Trainer George Poulis says there is no timetable for Liriano’s return. Game 3 in the series is Sunday at Toronto (5:38 pm). Liriano will be replaced on the Division Series roster by right-handed pitcher Danny Barnes.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers held off a late B-C Lions charge to gain some important ground in the CFL West. Bombers QB Matt Nichols threw two touchdown passes and even caught one himself in a trick play as Winnipeg defeated the B-C Lions 37-35. Both teams have nine wins to tie at 18 points for second in the division, but B-C has a game in hand.

Markus Grandlund scored the winner and added an assist as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in NHL pre-season action. Also, Charlie Coyle had a goal and an assist and Devan Dubnyk stopped 17 shots as the Minnesota Wild downed Winnipeg 5-1. And Anthony Mantha put away the winner as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3.
