Sidney Crosby couldn’t be stopped in Team Canada’s World Cup of Hockey opener. The Canadian captain had a goal and two assists against the Czech Republic in a 6-0 win at Air Canada Centre. Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, Joe Thornton, Jonathan Toews and Alex Pietrangelo also scored for the Canadians.

The Blue Jays find themselves another game back in the race for first in the AL East. Toronto dropped a 6-1 decision on the road against the Angels and are now three games back of Boston, which beat the Yankees earlier in the day. The Blue Jays’ defence had three fielding errors that cost them.

The Calgary Stampeders are headed to the CFL post-season. They clinched a playoff berth while extending their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games with a 48-23 win over the visiting Ottawa Redblacks. The Stampeders haven’t lost a game since their season-opener. Calgary is assured of at least a crossover position in the East Division.

Dan LeFevour did everything he could but it still wasn’t enough for an Argonauts win. The quarterback threw four touchdown passes but Toronto still lost 46-29 to the Blue Bombers. Winnipeg got six field goals from Justin Medlock in the victory. The Bombers have now won seven straight.

Canadian athletes earned five medals on Day 10 of competition at the Rio Paralympics. That pushes their total to 29, including eight gold and 10 silver. On the track, wheelchair racer Michelle Stilwell of Parksville, B-C sped to her second gold medal of the Games in winning the 100 metres.

A pair of Canadian MLS teams had their woes continue Saturday night. In Montreal, the Impact got a goal from Didier Drogba but still fell 3-1 to the New England Revolution. Montreal has only one win in seven games. Meanwhile in Seattle, the Sounders scored late to beat the Whitecaps 1-nil. Vancouver has just two wins in its last 11 games.
