The Tampa Bay Lightning say captain Steven Stamkos has a blood clot in his right arm. He is scheduled to have surgery to repair it on Monday and the team says he will miss one to three months. Lightning G-M Steve Yzerman announced the news after Tampa Bay beat New Jersey 3-1.

Mikael Backlund scored two goals and assisted on another and Joni Ortio stopped 28 shots as the Calgary Flames toppled Edmonton 5-0 in the final Saturday night game at Rexall Place. Johnny Gaudreau also scored twice for the Flames and Joe Colborne had the other.

The Detroit Red Wings took a step closer to their 25th straight playoff appearance. Jimmy Howard made 32 saves as Detroit topped the Maple Leafs 3-2 to jump into a playoff spot. Elsewhere, the Montreal Canadiens blew a three-goal lead en route to a 4-3 loss to Florida. And Ottawa dropped a 3-2 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Canada’s Kevin Koe opened round-robin play at the world men’s curling championship on Saturday with a 7-3 victory over Finland’s Aku Kauste at St. Jakobshalle.
Koe and his Calgary-based team of third Marc Kennedy, second Brent Laing and lead Ben Hebert had a bye for the opening draw. They will play Denmark and the United States on Sunday.

The San Antonio remain undefeated on home court. Kawhi Leonard had a career-high 33 points, LaMarcus Aldrige had 31 points and 15 rebounds and San Antonio beat the Toronto Raptors 102-95 for their franchise-record 64th victory. The Spurs also extended their NBA-record home winning streak to start the season to 39 games.

Monday’s final at the NCAA men’s March Madness basketball tournament is set. Number-1 seed North Carolina will play Number-2 Villanova. North Carolina advanced with an 83-66 win over Syracuse while Villanova booked a spot in the final with a 95-51 thrashing of Oklahoma.

The Vancouver Whitecaps held on for a nil-nil tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy despite playing without Matias Laba for most of the game. The midfielder was shown a straight red card 28 minutes in for challenging Mike Magee outside the Whitecaps’ penalty area. Elsewhere, Clint Dempsey scored as Seattle beat the Montreal Impact 1-0. And Toronto F-C fell 1-nil to the Colorado Rapids.
