WMBL:  A late inning Red Sox rally just fell short as the visiting Medicine Hat Mavericks handed the Regina Red Sox their fifth consecutive loss Saturday night at Currie Field.

The Mavericks took advantage of six Regina errors to score seven unearned runs on route to a 7-5 win.

Tommy Lay, the left-handed starter from Arizona Christian University, took the loss. Lay faced 33 batters over his six innings of work before turning the ball over to Jeremy Sylvester in the 7th inning. Regina born Kendal Daniel came on to face the Maverick hitters in the top of the 8th while Louis Cohen pitched a scoreless 9th inning.

Red Sox centerfielder Zach Weatherford continued to impress Regina baseball fans as he scored a run and was 2 for 4 at the plate. The speedy junior from Wright State also added a team best 10th stolen base.

Gabriel Montero had three RBIs and reached base five times on a hit, two walks, an error and a fielder’s choice.

Just over 500 fans were in attendance to watch Regina’s record fall to 8-6 at Currie Field and 12-15 overall.

The Red Sox will be looking for revenge Sunday night as they battle the Mavericks again at Currie Field.  Game time is 7:05 pm.

FIFA WWC:  England scored in the 108th minute to upset Germany 1-nil and claim third place at the Women’s World Cup. Fara Williams scored on a penalty kick in the second extra half as the Lionesses beat the number-1 ranked team heading into the tournament. The U-S and Japan play the final tomorrow in Vancouver.

MLB:  It was over before most the fans were even in their seats. R-A Dickey gave up four runs in the first inning as the Toronto Blue Jays went on to lose to the Detroit Tigers 8-3. Dickey finished his outing by allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5-and-two-thirds innings. He drops to 3-9 on the year.

MLS:  Spanish striker David Villa scored twice to give New York City FC a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Impact in MLS action. New York has now defeated Montreal twice in three weeks after winning 3-1 at Yankee Stadium on June 13th.

PGA:  Jason Bohn shot a 9-under 61 and heads into the final round in a four-way tie for the lead at The Greenbrier Classic.

Bohn, Sean O’Hair, Sung Joon Park and Bryce Molder were at 11-under. O’Hair and Park both shot 66. Molder had a 67.

A crowded leaderboard has 27 players within four shots of the lead. Tiger Woods wasn’t among them. Woods struggled on the back nine, shot 71 and was seven strokes back.

NASCAR:  Rain washed out qualifying for Sunday night’s race at Daytona International Speedway, where the field was set by practice times. Dale Earnhardt Junior will start from the pole because he was fastest in Friday’s first practice session. NASCAR’s most popular driver deliberately ran a very fast lap because his crew chief anticipated rain could interrupt qualifying.
