NHL:  Jason Garrison and the Lightning came out on top in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final on Saturday — even if there was some confusion in Tampa Bay’s net. Garrison’s power-play winner lifted the Lightning to a 4-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1. Rookie goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy relieved Ben Bishop twice to earn the victory.

BELMONT STAKES:  American Pharoah has joined an elite group. American Pharoah won horse racing’s first Triple Crown in 37 years, achieving one of the sporting world’s rarest feats with an easy victory at today’s Belmont Stakes. The last horse to achieve the feat was Affirmed in 1978.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP:  It was never in doubt who would take a penalty kick for Canada at the Women’s World Cup of soccer. Christine Sinclair stepped to the spot in injury time, putting a penalty shot away as Canada beat China 1-0 in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup.

MLS:  Kekuta Manneh scored a first-half goal and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Los Angeles 1-nil to snap the Galaxy’s 23-game home unbeaten streak. It was Los Angeles’ first loss at home since its season opener in 2014. In the 32nd minute, Manneh stole the ball in the Galaxy’s attacking half, found Octavio Rivero for a give-and-go and slid a shot between two defenders.

Also in MLS action, Sebastian Giovinco scored twice as Toronto FC beat D-C United 2-1 to end Washington’s 16-game home unbeaten streak. Maxim Tissot and Andres Romero scored and Montreal beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 for the Impact’s first road win in 26 games.

MLB:  The Toronto Blue Jays are heating up. Jose Reyes stole three bases and got two hits as Toronto beat Houston 7-2 for the Blue Jays’ fourth win in a row. Toronto remains four and a half games back of the New York Yankees for first in the AL East.

Clayton Kershaw allowed one hit and struck out 11 in eight innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0. Yasiel Puig hit an RBI double to break a scoreless tie in his return from the disabled list.

WMBL:  Starting pitcher Mike Thill and the Regina Red Sox fell 6-5 to the Edmonton Prospects Saturday night.   Thill went 4.2 innings scattering 6 hits and giving up 4 runs in the loss. Edmonton’s Noah Gapp got credit for the win.

Geoff Seto continues to swing a hot bat for the Red Sox going 3 for 3 with a run scored while Bryson Shelton chipped in with 2 RBIs.

The Red Sox are now 3-3 and will face the 5-1 Prospects again Sunday at 2 pm.
