NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says new Quebec City arena or not, the NHL is not looking at expansion right now.

He made the comment at a media availability Saturday prior to Game 2 of the Boston-Montreal playoff series when a Quebec reporter said there is sentiment in Quebec that the NHL looks more favourably on Seattle than Quebec City when it comes to future expansion.

And Quebec City is building a new arena while Seattle isn’t, the reporter noted.

“We’re not considering expansion right now,” Bettman replied. “We have not engaged in (an) expansion process.”

“If we reach a point in time where we decide we want to go through a formal expansion process, then we’ll evaluate all potential applicants and opportunities,” he added. “I answer the questions that I get asked. I get asked about Seattle far more – other than days like today – than I get asked about Quebec City.

“But we’re not ready to expand.”

Earlier, when Bettman was asked for his views on work starting on a new arena in Las Vegas, the commissioner said it was good news for Las Vegas and the people who visit it.

“Beyond that we haven’t made any plans. We, as I repeatedly have said, have received expressions of interest from people who might want to own a franchise in Las Vegas – as we have from a number of other cities – but we’re not involved in any expansion process.”

R.A. Dickey left the game with a win in tact, but for the second night in a row, the bullpen coughed up late runs as Pittsburgh beat Toronto 8-6. Dickey tossed six innings, allowing three runs, before the Pirates scored a combined six runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the comeback victory. After the game, Toronto selected the contract of Marcus Stroman. from triple-A Buffalo.

Blake Griffin scored 24 points, Chris Paul had 22 points and 14 assists, and the Los Angeles Clippers outlasted the Golden State Warriors 126-121 in Game 7 to win their thrilling first-round playoff series. Jamal Crawford scored 22 points for the third-seeded Clippers, who won just the franchise’s third playoff series in 38 years. Stephen Curry had 33 points and nine assists for the Warriors.

In two other Game 7s, Russel Westbrook had 27 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds as the Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated the Memphis Grizzlies 120-109. They’ll play the Clippers in the next round. Earlier, Paul George dropped 30 points as the Indiana Pacers toppled the Atlanta Hawks 92-80 to advance to the second round.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki singled up the middle in the seventh inning against the New York Mets for his 1,000th career hit. Tulowitzki, who is in his ninth year in the big leagues, became the fifth Rockies player with 1,000 hits and the 78th active player to reach that milestone. Colorado won 11-10.

Marcos Maidana did everything but beat Floyd Mayweather junior, taking him 12 tough rounds before losing a majority decision. Mayweather stretched his unbeaten streak to 46 fights to keep his welterweight titles, but Maidana swarmed all over him from the opening bell, giving him perhaps the toughest fight in his 16-year professional career.
