The Calgary Flames stayed red hot with a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators at Scotiabank Saddledome. Garnet Hathaway broke a tie in the third period and Alan Quine scored his first of the season minutes later as Calgary leapt into first place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Nashville.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had all sorts of trouble in Boston. David Krejci (KRAY’-chee) had a goal and assist to move past Hall of Famer Cam Neely for 10th on the Bruins’ all-time scoring list, and Boston snapped a three-game losing streak by doubling up the Leafs 6-3. It was a better night for the Ottawa Senators, they beat Pittsburgh 2-1 in overtime.

Atlanta has its first sports championship in 23 years. Atlanta United beat the Portland Timbers 2-nil in the M-L-S Cup to give the city its first title since the Braves won the World Series in 1995. Cheered on by the largest crowd in franchise history, United captured the crown in just its second season to set off a huge celebration.

Jennifer Jones is headed to the women’s final of the Canada Cup. The Winnipeg skip doubled up Ottawa’s Rachel Homan 8-4 in the semifinal in Saskatchewan to advance to Sunday’s title game. Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario will play Calgary’s Kevin Koe in the men’s final.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, becoming the second Sooner to win the award in as many years. Murray edged Alabama’s Tua Tagvailoa. The fourth-ranked Sooners play the top-ranked Crimson Tide in the Orange Bowl semifinal December 29th. Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield won the award in 2017.

Max (Blessed) Holloway returned from an injury-plagued year with a bang. The featherweight champion was dominant in stopping Number 1 contender Brian (T-City) Ortega via T-K-O at U-F-C 231 at Scotiabank Arena. The fight was called off by the doctor after four rounds. Ortega’s left eye was almost closed, his face a bloody mask.
