The Toronto Raptors dropped Game 1 of their first-round playoff series to the Philadelphia 76ers 131-111. Tyrese Maxey scored 21 of his playoff career-high 38 points in the third quarter for the Sixers while star Philadelphia centre Joel Embiid had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Of greater concern for the Raptors, star rookie Scottie Barnes hurt his ankle and his status for the rest of the series is in jeopardy. Game 2 is on Monday in Philadelphia.

In the other NBA playoff games, Anthony Edwards scored 36 points in his postseason debut and the seventh-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves beat the second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies 130-117, the Golden State Warriors took Game 1 against the Denver Nuggets 123-107 as Jordan Poole scored 30, and the Utah Jazz stole home-court advantage from the Dallas Mavericks with a 99-93 win.

In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the latest Battle of Ontario with a 5-4 overtime victory over the the Ottawa Senators. Mark Giordano scored the winner for the Leafs. Four other Canadian teams saw action Saturday. The Edmonton Oilers blanked the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0, the Montreal Canadiens got hammered 8-4 by the Washington Capitals, the Winnipeg Jets fell 7-4 to the Tampa Bay Lightning and The Calgary Flames roasted the Arizona Coyotes 9-1 as they clinched a playoff berth.

In the NLL, the Saskatchewan Rush notched a clutch 9-8 victory over the Western Conference-leading Colorado Mammoth at Sasktel Centre. The victory upped the Rush’s record to 6-10, and moved them out of the conference basement. The Rush will again attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host the San Diego Seals next Saturday.

The Toronto Blue Jays dropped the second game of their three-game weekend series with the Oakland Athletics, losing 7-5. After the game, word came out that Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu was dealing with forearm soreness in his throwing arm. The Korean lefty gave up six hits and five earned runs in Toronto’s loss.

Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli says an MRI on star Byron Buxton’s right knee didn’t reveal any structural issues. Baldelli said a team doctor would examine Buxton, but for now they anticipate he’ll be traveling with the team for the next series at Kansas City.

Toronto FC handed the Philadelphia Union their first loss of the season, defeating the visitors 2-1. Elsewhere around the MLS, CF Montreal took down the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1, in the debut of their new stadium Stade Saputo.
