Sunday Sports: Alouettes Remain Perfect

CFL

They left it pretty late, but the Montreal Alouettes scored 15 unanswered points in the final quarter to beat the Calgary Stampeders 30-26 and keep their unbeaten streak alive at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday night.

The Alouettes, with five wins in as many games, took a late 30-26 lead after running back Walter Fletcher ran the ball in from 31 yards with 63 seconds left in the CFL contest.

Tyson Philpot reached the 100-yard mark for the third time this campaign, catching 12 passes for 134 yards.

Montreal quarterback Cody Fajardo had another strong outing, completing 35-of-42 passing attempts for 374 yards and two touchdown tosses. The 32-year-old also accumulated 35 rushing yards on four carries.

Fajardo led the Alouettes on an impressive drive down the field to claim the late lead, pulling off a 39-yard pass to Philpot to move into field-goal range with time winding down.

“There’s a lot of belief in this locker room,” Fajardo said about his team’s resiliency. “When the chips are stacked against us, and everybody wants to point fingers at us, we don’t point fingers at each other.”

Calgary starter Jake Maier completed 18 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

The Stampeders were especially effective with their run game, totalling 148 yards on the ground, led by Peyton Logan (65 yards) and backup QB Tommy Stevens (49 yards).

“The hard part is you put that much effort into something and you feel like you deserved a better fate, and it doesn’t come through for you,” Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson said. “You gotta make sure you reload and do it again and again and again.”

• The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will be looking for their first win of the C-F-L season tonight when they host the B-C Lions at Tim Hortons Field. The 3-and-1 Lions are second in the West Division, while the 0-and-4 Tiger-Cats are last in the East Division. The Montreal Alouettes improved to 5-and-0 last night with a 30-26 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Calgary Stampeders.

Upper Marlboro police say Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson has been killed in a car crash in Maryland. The 24-year-old Jackson was one of three people who died yesterday in an overnight three-car crash in Prince George’s County. State police said the car that Jackson and two others were in was clipped by another vehicle. Jackson was a fourth-round draft pick by the Vikings in April.

The injury-riddled Toronto Blue Jays, nine games under .500, will attempt to win a series in Seattle Sunday when they send right-hander Jose Berrios (beh-REE’-ohs) to the mound to face the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Right-hander George Kirby will be on the mound for the hosts, who won Friday’s opener 2-1 but lost 5-4 yesterday.

Brazil is out of the Copa America men’s soccer tournament. Uruguay beat the favoured side 4-2 in penalty kicks in Las Vegas last night after 90 minutes of scoreless ball in a foul-filled quarterfinal match. Uruguay will meet Colombia on Wednesday in one semifinal, while Canada plays Argentina on Tuesday in the other semifinal. Colombia eliminated Panama 5-0 in yesterday’s earlier quarterfinal match.

The Niagara River Lions are one game closer to securing a playoff spot. Jahvon Blair scored a game-high 24 points as the River Lions bounced the Ottawa BlackJacks 110-86 on Saturday at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ont. Niagara increased its lead atop the Eastern Conference, moving to 9-5 as it attempts to top the table for the second consecutive season.

WNBA

Caitlin Clark posted the first triple-double by a rookie in WNBA history to rally Indiana to an 83-78 victory over visiting New York Saturday, snapping the Fever’s nine-game losing streak to the Liberty. Clark finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds for 9-and-13 Indiana. Sabrina Ionescu scored 22 to lead New York, which had won five straight games.
