Sunday Sports: Bruins, Canes Strike First, ‘Stangs Up 2-0
STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
- The Boston Bruins got two goals from Jake DeBrusk and 35 saves from netminder Jeremy Swayman on Saturday to whip the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 in Game 1 of their first-round, best-of-seven NHL playoff series. Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy had two assists each for the Bruins. David Kampf scored for Toronto. Game 2 is Monday in Boston.
- Stefan Noesen’s goal at 3:44 of the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win over the visiting New York Islanders in the opening game of their first-round, best-of-seven NHL playoff series. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Martin Necas also scored for the Canes. Kyle MacLean scored for the Islanders. Game 2 is Monday.
SJHL CHAMPIONSHIP
FLIN FLON, MB – Chase Friedt-Mohr led the way with a goal and assist, and Rhett Hamilton notched his second game-winner in as many games as the Melfort Mustangs downed the Flin Flon Bombers 4-1 in Game 2 of the SJHL championship series on Saturday night. James Venne made 42 saves and was terrific once again in net for the Mustangs, as they grabbed a 2-0 lead in the Canalta Cup Final. The Mustangs will look to push the Bombers to the brink Wednesday evening in Melfort.

Saturday night, the Saskatchewan Rush fell 12-11 against the Toronto Rock to close out the 2024 season.
Ryan Keenan had a five-point performance, but the Rush found themselves down 7-6 at the half. Robert Church scored a pair of goals and Mike Triolo had a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Saskatchewan was unable to muster a comeback late in the fourth quarter.
With the loss, the 2023/24 season came to a close with the Saskatchewan Rush finishing the season 8-10, tied for 8th place, but not in a playoff spot due to the NLL’s tie-breaker.

Daulton Varsho hit a three-run homer and José Berríos pitched six scoreless innings to lead the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. Berríos allowed six hits and struck out six. He has won all four of his starts for Toronto, which has six victories in its last seven games. Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
NBA PLAYOFFS (Round 1)
- DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic had 32 points and 12 rebounds, and the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets powered past LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 114-103 in their Western Conference playoff opener Saturday night.
- MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 18 of his 33 points in the third quarter and had nine rebounds to carry Minnesota in a tone-setting 120-95 victory over Phoenix to start the first round of the playoffs.
- NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart each scored 22 points, Deuce McBride led a huge effort by New York’s backups with 21 as they beat Philadelphia 111-104 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
- CLEVELAND (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 30 points, Jarrett Allen had 18 rebounds and Cleveland beat Orlando 97-83 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference playoff series.
MLS
All three Canadian Major League Soccer teams earned at least a point on Saturday. CF Montreal surrendered a late goal to settle for a 2-2 draw against visiting Orlando City. Toronto F-C got a goal from Prince Owusu in the 66th minute to edge the visiting New England Revolution, and the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps got second-half goals from Ryan Gauld and Brian White to beat the Sounders 2-0 in Seattle.
