SUNDAY SPORTS: CANADIANS LIGHT UP NCAA

The Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a stunning rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 and tie the World Series at two games apiece. Brett Phillips hit a soft single that Dodgers outfielder Chris Taylor bobbled as the tying run scored. Dodgers catcher Will Smith then lost control of the ball at home plate which allowed Randy Arozarena to score the winning run for Tampa Bay.

The Vancouver Whitecaps scored twice in the second half to edge the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1. Ali Adnan and Tosaint Ricketts scored both goals for Vancouver as they are now level with San Jose on points in seventh place in the Western Conference. Toronto F-C and Montreal both played last night but lost their games.

Canadian Keegan Messing won a bronze medal at Skate America in Las Vegas. The 28-year old earned 266.42 points throughout the event to finish third behind Americans Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou. Messing was the only Canadian at the event.

Race horse Belichick won the Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack for his first career victory. But it came at the expense of stablemate Mighty Heart who sought to become the first Canadian Triple Crown winner in over 15 years. Deviant and Clayton finished in second and third respectively.

Canadian Chuba Hubbard ran for 139 yards and a touchdown as Oklahoma State defeated Iowa St. 24-21. Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders threw for 235 yards and ran for 71 while also scoring a touchdown. Oklahoma State is undefeated at 4-0 and 3-0 in conference play.

Number two-ranked Alabama defeated Tennessee 48-17 but they lost receiver Jaylen Waddle to a broken right ankle injury. Waddle was injured on the opening kickoff and coach Nick Saban says he might be out for the rest of the season. Alabama and Canadian receiver John Metchie III led all receivers with 151 yards receiving on seven catches.
