SUNDAY SPORTS: DUNSTONE IN BRIER SEMIFINAL
Brad Gushue of Newfoundland and Labrador is a step closer to another Brier final. He defeated Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario 7-4 tonight in the 3-4 playoff game in Kingston, Ontario to book his spot in Sunday’s semifinal against Matt Dunstone of Saskatchewan. The winner of that game plays Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher in the final tomorrow night.

Mikko Koskinen made 46 saves as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1. The win moves Edmonton into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division with the Vegas Golden Knights. Alex Chiasson, Caleb Jones, Connor McDavid and Riley Sheahan scored for the Oilers.

Chris Tierney made up for a miss penalty shot in a big way. He scored the winner 35 seconds into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 win over the Sharks in San Jose. That’s Ottawa’s fourth win in five games. In other NHL action, Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist as the Florida Panthers beat Montreal 4-1 to break an eight-game home losing streak.

Bianca Andreescu’s knee injury is keeping her from another big tournament. The 19-year-old Canadian withdrew from the B-N-P Paribas Open in Indian Wells Saturday because of her lingering knee injury. Andreescu won at Indian Wells last year for her first W-T-A title. She then went on to win the Rogers Cup and the U-S Open.

Another strong showing for Nate Pearson at spring training. The Blue Jays’ top prospect pitched two no-hit innings in Toronto’s 5-2 loss to a Red Sox split squad in Grapefruit League action. Pearson surrendered his first two walks of spring training, but struck out three. He has not given up a hit and has nine strikeouts over five innings of exhibition play.
